Betting insights

  • The Jets are the first team in NHL history to win 15 of its first 16 games. Tonight, they visit the Lightning as the slight underdog. Winnipeg is first in goals for (4.56) while allowing the fewest goals per game (2.13).
  • The reigning Stanley Cup champion Panthers rode a seven-game winning streak into this two-game series against New Jersey. However, the Devils took the first game, 4-1, and now they are running it back. New Jersey is meeting preseason expectations by leading the Metropolitan up to this point.
  • Another team to keep an eye on is the Wild. They are 10-2-3, and winger Kirill Kaprizov is second in the NHL with 28 points. They face the Canadiens, who allow the most goals against (4.13) per game.
  • Are the Oilers starting to make a run? Edmonton has won back-to-back games since Connor McDavid returned. The captain has seven points in his last two games, and this is starting to look like the team that made a run to the Stanley Cup Final. They play the 5-9-2 Predators at home.

Maple Leafs picks vs. Capitals Nov. 13: Back Toronto to win a low-scoring game

Maple Leafs picks

The Toronto Maple Leafs are set for their third back-to-back in the last 10 days.

The pregame narrative: Toronto’s three-game winning streak was snapped by the Ottawa Senators yesterday. Now the Buds travel to Washington to take on the red-hot Capitals with Joseph Woll in goal.

Check out my Maple Leafs picks vs. the Capitals for the Nov. 13 game on Wednesday night.

Best Bet: Under 6.5 goals in regulation (-175)

The NHL schedule makers might be out to lunch but this should make tonight’s game more predictive.

Toronto got blown out by the Columbus Blue Jackets on a back-to-back on Oct. 22. The Leafs played some lazy hockey and hung rookie goaltender Dennis Hildeby out to dry.

Head coach Craig Berube had this to say: “Bottom line, it boiled down to them out-skating us, out-working us, and being a harder team.”

The Leafs have played two back-to-backs since and the results couldn’t be more different:

  • Nov: 3 @ Minnesota: 2-1 overtime loss
  • Nov. 9 vs. Montreal: 4-1 win

Tight checking and stingy defence should be the name of the game tonight, especially with Auston Matthews out.

Woll started on Saturday against the Canadiens and turned away 20 of 21 shots in the victory and I expect him to keep things rolling against the Capitals.

Washington has been lighting up the scoreboard this year but has fallen under this line in three of its last four games. Toronto, meanwhile, has cashed this bet in seven straight.

Key stat: The under on this total is 12-5 in Leafs games this season.

Quick picks

Maple Leafs moneyline (+107): For some reason, Toronto plays pretty well without its best player.

The Leafs are 38-19-2 all-time when Matthews is out of the lineup and are 3-1-0 since he was injured last Sunday. They’ve only given up five goals in that four-game span and seem committed to playing low-event hockey.

If that’s the case, I like Toronto to win because of a goaltending advantage.

Woll hasn’t gotten many reps this year but I liked what I saw out of him on Saturday.

Washington hasn’t announced a starter as of Wednesday morning but has been going back and forth every game between Logan Thompson and Charlie Lindgren.

It’s Lindgren’s turn in goal and he’s been the lame duck with a 3-4 record and .897 SV%.

Best NHL prop picks Nov. 12: Bet on McDavid and Pastrnak to put on a show tonight

NHL prop picks

Two superstars are the targets of my NHL prop picks for Tuesday.

The pregame narrative: Connor McDavid is healthy again and I think the Edmonton Oilers are in for an offensive explosion against the New York Islanders. I also love the value on David Pastrnak scoring multiple points tonight.

Find my NHL prop picks for Nov. 12 below.

Best Bet: McDavid to record a power play point (+125)

In McDavid’s second game back from injury, the Oilers destroyed Vancouver Canucks 7-3.

Edmonton’s captain scored a powerplay goal and added two assists in a three-point performance.

Tonight, the Oilers get the Islanders and I like the matchup.

  • New York allows the 12th-most goals per game (3.07)
  • It has the league’s third-worst penalty kill (65.6%).

Edmonton owns a 15.8% PP conversion rate this season but I expect it to start creeping up toward last year’s number (26.3%).

Key stat: Since the start of the 2019-2020 season, McDavid has 242 PP points in 370 games.

Quick pick

Pastrnak to record 2+ points (+165): This value doesn’t come around often with Pastrnak but he’s in a bit of a cold spell.

The Bruins’ top point producer has 14 points in 16 games with just four multi-point performances on the season.

He’s well off the 110-point pace he’s achieved over the last two seasons but this is a good spot and a nice price to back him at.

The St. Louis Blues rank in the bottom 10 in multiple defensive stats:

  • 3.47 goals against per game (27th)
  • 30.3 shots against per game (24th)
  • 75.6% penalty kill (23rd)

St. Louis lost back-to-back games and is fresh off an 8-1 thrashing by the Washington Capitals. If there’s any time to get behind Pastrnak, it’s now.

Pastrnak to record 2+ points (+185): This value doesn’t come around often with Pastrnak but he’s in a bit of a cold spell.

The Bruins’ top point producer has 14 points in 16 games with just four multi-point performances on the season.

Maple Leafs picks vs. Senators Nov. 12: Matthew Knies continues to be productive in increased role

Maple Leafs picks

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators clash for the first time this season.

The pregame narrative: The Battle of Ontario is on and Toronto has been the better team this season. I’m betting on the Leafs to win a low-scoring game while backing Matthew Knies to score a point.

Best Bet: Maple Leafs moneyline (-136)

Toronto is playing some inspiring hockey right now.

Under new coach Craig Berube, the Leafs are starting to click and have a 5-1-1 record in their last seven games.

His team is also playing really good defence right now.

  • The Leafs allow the fifth-fewest goals per game (2.56)
  • They kill penalties at the eighth-highest rate (83.9%)
  • Toronto has allowed four goals over the last four games

If the Leafs go with a rotating goalie approach it should be Anthony Stolarz getting the call tonight. He’s been fantastic this season but we’ll touch more on that later.

Key stat: Toronto is 7-2-0 at home this season.

Quick picks

Under 6 goals (-115): I feel good about both starters tonight but let’s get back to Stolarz.

The lifetime backup had his opportunity to show his stuff as a starter with Joseph Woll sidelined and he impressed.

  • Stolarz has a 2.00 GAA and .930 SV%
  • He’s stopped the fifth most goals above expected (7.0) this season, per Money Puck.
  • He’s allowed just three goals across his last three starts.

Linus Ullmark is expected to start for the Sens and although he hasn’t been good this season (.890 SV%), the Swede has never finished a season with a SV% below .905 and he’s a former Vezina winner.

Ottawa is also a good defensive team, limiting opponents to the sixth-fewest shots per game (27.2).

Knies to record a point (-134): With Auston Matthews doubtful to return to the lineup tonight, Knies should continue to have an increased role.

The Winger is getting a career-high 17:58 of ice time per game and that just keeps increasing. He’s played at least 18:30 in eight straight games.

As a result, he has 10 points in 16 games. Knies is also skating with the first powerplay unit in Matthews’ absence and he has shown positive results scoring three PP points in his last three games.

He’s playing on the first line with the red-hot Mitch Marner and I love his value to get on the scoresheet tonight.

NHL schedule, odds and betting lines Nov. 12: Battle of Ontario renewed, Canucks host Flames

The latest: The Battle of Ontario is renewed when the Toronto Maple Leafs host the Ottawa Senators. Then, the Winnipeg Jets look to keep the good times rolling when they play the New York Rangers in the Big Apple.

Betting insights

  • Ottawa had Toronto’s number last season, winning three of four games while averaging 4.5 goals per game. The Sens have a middling 7-7-0 record this season and have struggled to find offence in their last five (2.2 goals/game), while the Leaf’s power play has been clicking in the absence of Auston Matthews (7-of-3).
  • The Jets’ 14-1-0 record is the best start through 15 games in NHL history. Winnipeg has been receiving elite play from Connor Hellebuyck who looks for a second-straight Vezina Trophy. Igor Shesterkin has also been solid for New York, meaning offence could be hard to come by.
  • Connor McDavid recorded his first three-point game of the season in a Saturday night drumming of the Vancouver Canucks. Now, the Oilers look to improve on their miserable 2-5-3 home record.
  • Calgary snapped a three-game losing streak to Vancouver with a 6-5 win on opening night. The Flames are 3-5-2 since their 5-0-1 start to the season and are struggling to get consistent goalkeeping between Dustin Wolf and Dan Vladar.

NHL best bets Nov. 11: Back the Golden Knights, Predators on the puck line

NHL best bets

I’m backing two underdogs to come through on the puck line in Monday’s NHL best bets.

The pregame narrative: The Vegas Golden Knights host the red-hot Carolina Hurricanes and are underdogs despite a perfect home record. I’m backing Vegas and also the Nashville Predators, who are in Colorado to play the Avalanche.

Best Bet: Golden Knights +1 (-167)

The Hurricanes are one of the league’s best teams at 10-3-0 and were just riding an eight-game winning streak before losing to the Avalanche on Saturday.

That said, Vegas is no pushover and Carolina is down its top goaltender.

Frederik Andersen had a 1.49 GAA and .941 SV% through four starts before suffering a lower-body injury that will keep him out week-to-week.

The Canes have turned to Pyotr Kochetkov in the meantime, who is a fine player but nowhere near the Dane in terms of production or consistency. Kochetkov has a middling .896 SV%, and his 7-1-0 record can largely be attributed to the team’s offence.

Carolina has ripped four-plus goals in seven of his eight starts but Vegas should be able to keep up.

The Golden Knights are averaging the second-most goals per game (4.36) and have scored at least four goals in all but one of their home games.

Key stat: Vegas is 8-0-0 at home and is 9-2-3 against this line.

Quick picks

Predators +1 (-163): Speaking of goaltending, the Avalanche have a serious problem on their hands.

Alexander Georgiev has been sieve-like this season with a 4.04 GAA and an .851 SV%. Those marks rank 51st and 52nd, respectively, in a 32-team league. The Belarusian has also allowed the most goals above expected (10.0), according to Money Puck.

Colorado hasn’t been able to outscore Georgiev’s poor play often and is 2-6 when he’s in goal (with one of those wins coming in overtime).

The Predators are far from a juggernaut but are 4-3-2 against this line since starting the season off 0-5.

Juuse Saros has also found his footing and owns a 1.77 GAA and .941 SV% this month.

Picks made at 2:19 p.m. ET 11/11/2024.

Betting insights

  • Montreal has lost six games in a row, and five of those losses were on the puck line. Buffalo has five multi-goal wins in its past nine games.
  • After a strong start in Calgary, the Flames have dropped seven of their past nine games. They only have one regulation win since Oct. 15.
  • The Predators and Avalanche have averaged 7.6 total goals in their past five meetings, hitting the over four times. Also, the over is 6-1 in Colorado’s past seven games overall.
  • Vegas is 8-0-0 at home this season. That’s tied for the ninth-longest home win streak to start a year. The 2022-23 Boston Bruins hold the record at 14 wins.
