The 2025 NHL draft starts on Friday, and Matthew Schaefer has emerged as the consensus No. 1 pick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest:<\/strong> The New York Islanders entered the draft lottery with a 3.5% chance of selecting first overall, and now they have the opportunity to select Schaefer. The Erie Otters’ defenceman slots in ahead of Michael Misa, who is projected to go second to the San Jose Sharks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Best 2025 NHL draft odds<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The favourite: Schaefer (-10,000)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schaefer only played 17 games for the Otters this year, after battling mononucleosis at the beginning of the season and then breaking his collarbone with Canada at the World Junior Championships. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the scouts saw all they needed to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He had seven goals and 22 points in those contests and is praised for his skill, size, speed, maturity and hockey IQ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Top-line defencemen who are 6-foot-2 don’t grow on trees in the NHL. The Islanders are surely thrilled with the opportunity to add Schaefer to a rebuilding core.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The favourite to go second overall: Misa (-455)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Misa was just the eighth player ever to be granted exceptional player status to enter the OHL early. He didn’t disappoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dynamic centre scored 62 goals and logged 134 points in 64 games for the Saginaw Spirit this year. That tied Patrick Kane for the most goals in a draft-eligible season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hailing from Oakville, Ontario, he would slot into a top-six role on San Jose behind Macklin Celebrini.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re building a team from the studs, having centres like that is a great place to start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Frondell is projected to go third overall. The Swedish centre already has two years of pro hockey under his belt, logging 25 points (11 goals, 14 assists) in 29 regular-season games with Djurgarden. Frondell helped his team earn a promotion to the Swedish Hockey League for next season.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    • Desnoyers had himself a year with the Moncton Wildcats in the QMJHL. He led the team in points (84), was second in goals (35) and helped the Wildcats secure the league championship.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
