NHL anytime goal picks Oct. 30: Back David Pastrnak and Seth Jarvis on Thursday

NHL anytime goal picks

David Pastrnak and Seth Jarvis headline Thursday’s NHL goal picks.

The pregame narrative: Pastrnak’s Boston Bruins sit at the bottom of the Atlantic Division through 12 games, but they have a winnable matchup against the Buffalo Sabres. Jarvis, meanwhile, looks to stay hot as the Carolina Hurricanes host the New York Islanders.

NHL anytime goal picks

Best Bet: Jarvis to score (+140)

The biggest knock on Carolina last year was its lack of a bona fide No. 1 goalscorer.

It sure looks like Jarvis, entering his fifth season, could be that guy. The 23-year-old has seven goals through nine games, good for a torrid 64-goal pace.

Jarvis scored 32 goals in 73 games last season, so expecting him to double that mark would be aggressive. But can he net 40 or 45? Absolutely — and I want to ride the hot hand.

-> Bet on Jarvis and the Hurricanes tonight!

  • The centre leads Carolina in shots (33), scoring chances (35), high-danger chances (20) and xG (5.07), according to Natural Stat Trick.
  • New York is giving up the most xG (3.88) and high-danger chances (15.41) on a 60-minute basis.

This is a dream matchup for Jarvis, who is playing first-line minutes against an awful squad.

Key stat: Jarvis scored two goals in his last game against the Islanders.

NHL predictions

Pastrnak to score 1+ goals (+110): Thursday’s matchup between the Sabres and Bruins should feature plenty of goals.

Both teams give up boatloads of chances and have poor goaltending. Buffalo cedes the most shot attempts (66.82) on a 60-minute basis.

-> Join NorthStar Bets to bet on Pastrnak now

Pastrnak has been productive so far with six goals and 16 points in 12 games.

He leads Boston in basically every major offensive category, and his 93 shot attempts are 39 more than the next closest player (Viktor Arvidsson).

Maple Leafs vs. Blue Jackets prop picks Oct. 29: Back Auston Matthews, Morgan Rielly to get on the score sheet

Maple Leafs picks

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Columbus Blue Jackets take part in the lone NHL game on Wednesday.

The pregame narrative: Both teams played yesterday, with the Leafs picking up a second consecutive win to get them above .500 on the season. The Blue Jackets have won back-to-back games as well, with both victories coming in overtime.

Maple Leafs picks vs. Blue Jackets

Best Bet: Matthews anytime goalscorer (+110)

There are still not a lot of players who can match Matthews’ goalscoring threat on a nightly basis.

  • He’s on the ice a lot, ranking fifth among NHL forwards in average ice time (22:12).
  • Matthews ranks sixth in the league in shots on goal (41). No one else on the Leafs has more than 27 shots.

The centreman has scored five goals in 10 games, which is a very respectable 41-goal pace. But there’s an argument to be made that he’s still underachieving.

-> Bet on Auston Matthews tonight!

Matthews has 6.6 expected goals, per Money Puck. That also ranks sixth in the NHL.

Columbus has been solid defensively, but it allows the second-most shots per game (32.8). Eventually, that’ll catch up to the Blue Jackets, and Matthews is an elite sniper.

Key stat: Matthews had two goals on 12 shots in three games against Columbus last season.

Best NHL prop predictions

Rielly to score 1+ points (+115): Rielly was on fire to start the season, recording six points in his first six games.

He’s cooled off significantly, but it’s time for him to break his pointless drought.

Rielly certainly isn’t short on opportunities. With Mitch Marner now in Vegas, the defenceman has reclaimed a spot on the top power play.

-> Don’t miss out — Bet on Maple Leafs vs. Blue Jackets props

The PP has been dreadful, ranking 27th in the NHL (14.8%), but it has scored in two of the past three games. When the Leafs start scoring with the man advantage, the points will pile up for Rielly.

Luckily, the power play has a great matchup tonight. The Blue Jackets own the NHL’s second-worst penalty kill (63.3%).

This is a great chance for Toronto to break out offensively, and Rielly has great value following three straight games without a point.

NHL anytime goal picks Oct. 28: Bet on Jack Hughes, Macklin Celebrini to light the lamp

NHL anytime goal picks

All 32 NHL teams are in action for the return of NHL Frozen Frenzy.

The pregame narrative: On the league’s most chaotic day, I’ve got my eyes on two budding superstars. Jack Hughes and the New Jersey Devils are looking for their ninth straight win before Macklin Celebrini and the San Jose Sharks host the Los Angeles Kings.

NHL anytime goal picks

Best Bet: Hughes to score (+155)

Hughes is turning into one of the NHL’s top goalscorers.

  • The 24-year-old is tied atop the league with eight goals in nine games. Seven of those goals came at even strength.
  • He takes 4.0 shots on goal per game, which also ranks inside the top 10.

Hughest has dealt with many injuries in the early portion of his career, but when he’s healthy, he’s a big problem.

-> Bet on Hughes and the Devils tonight!

In six seasons, Hughes has only played more than 62 games once. In that season, he suited up for 78 games and had 43 goals (99 points).

That was back in 2022-23 when Hughes was 21 years old. If he can stay on the ice, it’s fair to assume he hasn’t reached his production ceiling yet.

Key stat: In the first half of this home-and-home with the Colorado Avalanche, Hughes scored a pair of goals in 22:43 of ice time.

NHL predictions

Celebrini to score (+180): Here’s another young stud with tremendous value to score.

As a sophomore, Celebrini is fourth in the NHL with 15 points, one behind a trio of players with 16.

He is far and away the best player on the Sharks, and the coaching staff is certainly leaning on him as much as possible.

-> Wager on NHL goalscorers at NorthStar Bets

Celebrini is fifth among NHL forwards in even-strength time on ice per game (17:20).

He’s also arguably the hottest player in the league right now. Celebrini has 10 points (five goals) in his last four games.

The Kings aren’t a top defensive team like they were in past seasons, either. They rank near the middle of the pack for goals against (3.1/game) and shots against (27.4/game) with a below-average penalty kill (73.8%).

At almost a 2-to-1 price, this pick feels like a no-brainer.

Flames vs. Maple Leafs prop picks Oct. 28: Bet on Morgan Rielly to contribute offensively

Maple Leafs picks

The Toronto Maple Leafs host a fellow Canadian team, the Calgary Flames, on Tuesday.

The pregame narrative: The Flames are struggling, holding a 2-7-1 record to this point. This is a great opportunity for Toronto to gain some momentum and potentially start a win streak to help climb the Eastern Conference standings.

Check out my Maple Leafs prop picks vs. the Flames for the game on Oct. 28, featuring Morgan Rielly and Jonathan Huberdeau.

Maple Leafs picks vs. Flames

Best Bet: Rielly over 1.5 shots (-118)

Rielly started the season on fire, recording six points in his first six games. He was slowed down by a minor injury, but I’m expecting him to get back in a groove starting Tuesday.

The offensive defenceman went under this mark in back-to-back games but recorded 2+ shots in five of the six games before.

Overall, Rielly is averaging 2.6 shots per game, so this line is a fair bit under his standard.

-> Bet on Morgan Rielly tonight!

Plus, this is a great matchup. The Flames have allowed 28 or more shots in nine of 10 games this season.

They also take the third-most penalty minutes per night. That should provide Rielly and the top power play unit a lot of good looks at Dustin Wolf.

Key stat: Rielly has cashed this wager in nine of his last 14 regular season games.

Best NHL prop predictions

Huberdeau to score 1+ points (-108): Toronto’s defence has been struggling too, so I wanted to find a way to back Calgary’s offence.

I think this pick makes a lot of sense, and here’s why:

  • Huberdeau plays the second-most minutes per game among Calgary forwards.
  • He scored three points in two games vs. Toronto last season, going 2-0 against this wager.

The veteran started this season on the injured reserve and has just two points in five games since returning.

-> Don’t miss out — Bet on Flames vs. Maple Leafs prop markets

But that doesn’t deter me from this pick. Huberdeau skates on the top line and the first power-play unit, where he will surely be more productive in the future.

And it’s not like the Leafs have been a defensive juggernaut. In fact, they’ve been quite bad. Toronto is allowing the sixth-most goals per game (3.7).

NHL anytime goal picks Oct. 27: Back David Pastrnak and Evgeni Malkin on Monday

NHL anytime goal picks

The NHL supplies two games for Monday’s sports equinox, and I’ve got one goalscorer pick from each of them.

The pregame narrative: David Pastrnak’s Boston Bruins are struggling, but have a winnable game tonight against the Ottawa Senators. I’m backing Pastrnak to score, and also expect Evgeni Malkin to continue his sizzling start to the season.

Best Bet: Malkin to score (+220)

Malkin has turned back the clock through the early goings of his 20th season, logging two goals and 12 assists through nine games.

His Penguins currently sit second in the Metropolitan Division at 6-2-1 with the seventh-best offence (3.56 goals per game) in hockey.

No one saw that coming, and Malkin and Pittsburgh will likely regress soon. But I doubt it will happen on Monday.

-> Bet on Malkin and the Penguins tonight!

The St. Louis Blues, Pittsburgh’s opponent, have been getting demolished through eight games thanks to some atrocious goaltending:

  • 31st in GAA (4.13)
  • 32nd in team SV% (.850)

Joel Hofer is in the net tonight, and he’s been a big part of the problem. Jordan Binnington’s understudy has allowed 12 goals on 57 shots — netting out to a nasty 6.23 GAA and .789 SV%.

Key stat: Most of Malkin’s production has been as a passer, but he still ranks fifth on the team in xG (2.88) and fourth in shot attempts (33), per Natural Stat Trick.

NHL predictions

Pastrnak to score 1+ goals (+130): Boston snapped its six-game losing streak with a 3-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night.

Pastrnak supplied an assist in that contest and now has eight points and four goals in his last six games. The Czech winger is doing everything he can to drive the bus, even if the team as a whole isn’t producing.

-> Join NorthStar Bets to bet on Pastrnak now

Luckily for Boston, it gets another struggling team in Ottawa.

  • The Senators are missing their captain, Brady Tkachuk, and are 4-4-1 with a 3.89 GAA (29th in the NHL).
  • Leevi Merilainen is in goal for Ottawa. The netminder gave up seven goals to the lowly Buffalo Sabres in his only other start.

Pastrnak leads the Bruins in xG (3.57) and has more than double the shot attempts (83) than the second-closest player, Viktor Arvidsson (41).

Best NHL anytime goal picks Oct. 26: Expect Connor McDavid to shine on Sunday

NHL anytime goal picks

The league’s best player highlights Sunday’s NHL goal scorer picks.

The pregame narrative: In terms of scoring goals, Connor McDavid is off to a slow start, but I expect a superstar performance against a Canadian rival. Before that, look for Jason Robertson to take advantage of the Nashville Predators’ subpar defence.

Check out my NHL anytime goal picks for Oct. 26.

-> Join NorthStar Bets to start betting on the NHL

NHL anytime goal picks

Best Bet: McDavid to score 1+ goals (+130)

McDavid is a pass-first player, as indicated by his one goal and 10 assists through nine games.

But he’s still an elite goal scorer too, and the single tally is because of bad luck and not poor play.

  • McDavid is tied with Leon Draisaitl for the most shots by an Edmonton Oilers forward (25).
  • The problem is his 4.0% shooting percentage. For context, he has never had a shooting percentage below 12.0% over an entire season.

Some regression to the mean is coming, and it feels like there’s always fireworks when the Oilers play the Vancouver Canucks.

-> Bet on Connor McDavid to light the lamp!

Vancouver is a below-average team in terms of goals allowed and shots allowed, and it owns the 11th-worst penalty kill.

That is a formula for disaster when playing McDavid, Draisaitl and Co.

This is the right matchup for the Oilers’ captain to get on the score sheet.

Key stat: McDavid has 24 goals and 45 assists in 43 career regular-season games vs. the Canucks.

NHL predictions

Robertson to score 1+ goals (+125): Every time I write about Robertson, it amazes me to see that he’s a point-per-game player in his NHL career.

Not many finish their career with that feat, so it showcases how good the Dallas Stars forward is, and he hasn’t even hit his prime (26 years old).

A lot of that production comes from scoring. Robertson has 35+ goals in three of the past four seasons.

-> Join NorthStar Bets to bet on NHL props

He only has three so far this year, but he has recorded a whopping 35 shots, and his 8.6% shooting rate is going to improve.

Finally, he has a great matchup. The Predators allow 30+ shots per game and are expected to start backup goalie Justus Annunen (5.08 GAA, .808 SV%).
