Maple Leafs vs. Penguins prop predictions Nov. 3: Expect Crosby, Knies to provide offence

The Toronto Maple Leafs host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday at Scotiabank Arena.

The pregame narrative: Toronto looks for a second consecutive win but will need to overcome a red-hot Penguins team led by Sidney Crosby. I expect a lot of goals in this game, so I’m backing Crosby to be productive as well as Toronto’s Matthew Knies.

Maple Leaf vs. Penguins predictions

Best Bet: Crosby over 2.5 shots (-112)

Crosby is having a great season, scoring nine goals and 17 points so far.

He started the year slowly but has turned in eight goals in his last nine games. The Penguins’ longtime captain wasn’t shooting much to start, but the chances have come in bunches lately.

First eight games: 1-7 vs. this line

Last five games: 4-1 vs. this line

Even at age 38, Crosby is playing close to 19 minutes a night. He is still the best player on a playoff-hopeful Penguins team that is 8-3-2 to begin the season.

Plus, the Leafs provide a good matchup.

Toronto gives up 3.7 goals on 28.8 shots per game. Both of those are below-average in the NHL.

Key stat: Crosby had 11 shots in three games vs. the Leafs in 2024-25.

Best NHL prop picks

Knies to score (+155): I think there’s some strong value in backing Knies to grab a goal on Monday.

He is the only Leafs forward other than Auston Matthews to average more than 20 minutes on ice per game.

Knies has six more points than Matthews, though, scoring 15 in 12 games while his linemate has nine.

So Matthews being priced at +105 just doesn’t sit right with me, especially when I can back Knies at +155.

Pittsburgh has excelled at limiting opponent goals (2.6 against per game), but it gives up the fourth-most shots (30.9/game).

Eventually, that should come back to haunt the Penguins, and Toronto is a team that can take advantage.

NHL anytime goal picks Nov. 3: Bet on McDavid, Bedard to shine

Two star players highlight Monday’s NHL goalscorer picks.

The pregame narrative: Connor McDavid has been on a tear in the early going despite being in a bit of a goalless drought. I expect him to break the trend tonight, while Connor Bedard has value to score in a late-night matchup against the Seattle Kraken.

Best Bet: McDavid to score (+135)

McDavid has 17 points in 13 games. Not too shabby, right?

And yet there’s an argument to be made that he’s leaving a lot of production on the table.

The Oilers captain has only three goals so far, while teammate Leon Draisaitl has nine. The interesting part is that McDavid (42) outpaces Drasaitl in shots (38) and expected goals.

That compliments Draisaitl’s ability as a goalscorer but also illustrates some bad luck for McDavid.

For context, his 7.1% shooting percentage would rank by far the lowest in his career. In 10 previous seasons, the worst shooting percentage McDavid finished with is 12.0%.

The superstar is the best playmaker in the league, but his three goals so far are well below his standards. Over the last five seasons, only five players have more goals than McDavid.

He has a great opportunity to get on the board against a horrendous defensive team in the St. Louis Blues.

Key stat: The Blues allow the most goals per game in the NHL (4.2).

NHL predictions

Bedard to score (+180): Bedard isn’t on the same level as McDavid, but he’s budding into a top star in the league.

Firstly, he’s being treated like a star. He is one of 16 forwards to average north of 21 minutes of ice time per night.

That should naturally give him more scoring chances.

And so far, he has six goals in 12 games. That 41-goal pace would easily exceed the 23 goals he scored as a sophomore last season.

That pace also helps evaluate the value of this pick. If he keeps lighting the lamp at this rate, these odds will get priced closer to even money rather than 2-to-1 in the future.

The Kraken have been solid defensively, but they have a bottom-six penalty kill (67.8%), which is something that works in Bedard’s favour.

Bedard has two goals with the man advantage this season and averages over three minutes of power-play time.

The pregame narrative: An established veteran has my attention on Sunday. Chris Kreider is looking comfortable on the Anaheim Ducks and has value to produce at significant plus-money odds.

Best Bet: Kreider to score (+210)

Few players scoring at Kreider’s pace are priced in this range.

The ex-New York Rangers star is fitting in nicely with the Ducks. He has five goals through six games this season, including a marker in his most recent outing.

He’s in prime position to lead Anaheim’s offence. Kreider plays on Anaheim’s first line alongside Leo Carlsson and Troy Terry, a pair of playmaking forwards who can get him the puck.

Most impressively, Kreider ranks second on the Ducks in high-danger chances (18) despite missing four games due to illness.

That’s a testament to Kreider’s ability to dominate in front of the net.

The matchup against the New Jersey Devils is a little more appealing than it may seem. New Jersey played on Saturday, which means Jake Allen will start instead of Jacob Markstrom.

The pregame narrative: Dylan Larkin is leading the Detroit Red Wings’ early-season success, and he’s a great pick to tickle twine on Sunday. Elsewhere, Chris Kreider is looking comfortable on the Anaheim Ducks and has value to produce.

Best Bet: Larkin to score (+125)

Larkin is becoming someone you can set your watch to, and he’s on pace to produce his best season yet.

The Detroit captain has scored 30-plus goals and 69-plus points in four consecutive seasons. This year, he may be taking his game to another level.

The 29-year-old has eight goals and 17 points through 12 games, and is a big reason why the Red Wings have been one of the biggest surprises in the early going.

His production is no fluke, either. Larkin ranks highly in the following categories:

19th in expected goals (5.86)
T-23rd in scoring chances (43)
T-38th in high-danger chances (19)
T-50th in shots (33)

The matchup is ripe for Larkin to do damage, too. Detroit battles the San Jose Sharks, and they’ve struggled mightily in their own zone.

San Jose is allowing the third-most shots per game (31.6) and is tied for ceding the most goals per outing (4.17).

Larkin will be in the mix offensively in a juicy spot.

Key stat: Larkin has five goals in his last seven games.

The pregame narrative: This game is practically a pick’em, with Toronto slightly favoured at -127 at the time of writing. The Maple Leafs’ defence and goaltending has been suspect lately, leading to six straight games going over a 6.5-goal total.

Maple Leaf prop picks vs. Flyers

Best Bet: Michkov to record a point (-118)

This might be the least-watched Maple Leafs game in history with the Blue Jays playing in Game 7 of the World Series back in Toronto.

The Jays’ run has taken hold of the city, and deservedly so, meaning no one is really talking about how bad the Maple Leafs have played lately.

Toronto has a 2-4 record in its last six games. It has allowed 4.3 goals per game in that span with at least three goals in each contest.

Goaltending was a strength for the Leafs last season. But Anthony Stolarz has a 3.27 GAA and .886 SV% in eight starts. His understudy, Cayden Primeau, has been even worse (4.30 GAA, .838 SV%).

Michkov is playing top-line minutes for Philadelphia alongside Owen Tippett and the newly-acquired Trevor Zegras.

He only has five points in 10 games, but I’m not too worried about that. The 2023 No. 7 overall pick had a stellar rookie campaign last year, logging 63 points in 80 games.

Some positive regression seems likely, and the Maple Leafs are in a rut.

Key stat: Michkov is 4-3 against this line in his last seven games.

Tavares under 2.5 shots (+115): We’re only 10 games into the season, but the Rick Tocchet effect is apparent in Philly.

The Flyers are off to a 6-3-1 start while playing amazing defensive hockey. They’re giving up the fifth-fewest shot attempts (52.31) and shots (23.84) on a 60-minute basis, per Natural Stat Trick.

Tavares has cleared this line in five straight games, but he went under this line in six straight games before that.

All in all, he’s averaging 2.81 shots per game this season. Expecting him to go under that mark against the Flyers seems reasonable to me.

Friday’s NHL slate features just two evening games, and I’ve got a prop pick from both.

Detroit has been one of the early surprises this season, compiling a stellar 8-3-0 record through 11 games.

Now, the Red Wings head west to take on a defensively suspect Anaheim Ducks squad.

Anaheim allowed the most chances (66.73) and shots (31.86), and the second-most xG (3.46) on a 60-minute basis last season, per Natural Stat Trick.

The squad ranks 29th in xGA per 60 this season (3.65).

Seider only has four points — all assists — so far, but he has found the stat sheet in back-to-back games. He’s leading the team in ice time (25:17) and is a member of the squad’s top power play.

Getting that much playing time is a boon for this market, especially against the Ducks.

Key stat: Seider cashed this bet in both games against Anaheim last season.

Ovechkin’s 9.8% shooting percentage is well below his career baseline. I think he’s due for some positive regression tonight.
