Best EPL Week 5 prop picks: Bet on Xavi Simons to contribue for Tottenham

Tottenham’s newest transfer headlines this weekend’s EPL prop bets.

The pregame narrative: Xavi Simons wasted no time getting going for his new club as he recorded an assist in his Premier League debut. He should be able to keep his momentum going in his second start against Brighton on Saturday.

Best bet: Simons to record an assist (+190)

The 22-year-old was expected to step into a midfield role with Tottenham, but Thomas Frank had other plans. He decided to utilize Simons as a winger in his first two starts across the EPL and UCL.

Playing out wide should certainly increase his offensive output, which is what I’m looking for with this market.

He’s gradually received more playing time from one start to the next and should be in line for 80-plus minutes on Saturday.

In those two starts, he recorded three shots. None of which were on target, but the volume is solid. He’s still 1-1 on this wager for Tottenham, though, thanks to grabbing an assist in his debut off a corner kick.

Brighton is a bottom-half defensive team, allowing the ninth-most xG through four matches (5.6).

The Hotspur are tied for fourth in the EPL with eight goals. The side should be able to add to that total this weekend.

Even when he was deployed as a midfielder for RB Salzburg in the Bundesliga, he was one of the more attacking-minded midfielders in world soccer.

Key stat: According to fbref.com, Simons ranks in the 99th percentile among midfielders for non-penalty goals per 90 (0.37) and in the 95th percentile for assists per 90 (0.26).

EPL Matchday 5 predictions

Mateta to score (+140): No team has conceded more goals than West Ham’s 11. That provides Mateta with a nice opportunity to score on Saturday.

  • The French forward has played all but nine minutes for Crystal Palace in the EPL.
  • He has three goals in seven matches across all competitions, but only one so far in the Premier League.
  • Mateta finished tied for 10th in the EPL for goals last year with 14, so an uptick should be expected.

On top of all that, there’s seriously no better matchup for a striker.

Not only has West Ham allowed the most goals, but the club also concedes the most shots on target per match (5.0).

Arsenal vs. Manchester City (Sept. 21, 11:30 a.m. ET)

Best bet: Arsenal to win (-110)

I have no faith in Manchester City and will continue to fade the side when the price is right.

Arsenal is rolling to start the season, going 3-0-1 in the Premier League and starting its UCL run with a 2-0 road win over Athletic Bilbao.

Man City hasn’t had the same success.

  • The Citizens are 2-0-2 in the EPL, with their sole road win coming over Wolverhampton. Wolves are the Premier League’s only pointless team after a 0-0-4 start.
  • Manchester City’s road loss came against Brighton, a 1-1-2 side that currently sits outside the top 10.

Brighton is a solid team, but it is without a doubt a tier or two below Arsenal.

The Gunners’ only defeat this season came against Liverpool. That doesn’t hurt their stock much as the Reds are the favourite to win the EPL with a 4-0-0 record.

Arsenal has three clean sheets and nine goals for in four games, while only conceding once to Liverpool on a free kick.

Key stat: The side owns the biggest average goal differential in the Premier League through four matches (+2.0).

Matchup: Barcelona vs. Getafe (Sept. 21, 3:30 p.m. ET)

Barcelona over 2.5 total goals (-110): Barcelona sits in second in La Liga behind Real Madrid but has the best goal differential ahead of the weekend (+10).

  • The side has scored three-plus goals in all three of its wins.
  • Barcelona’s 3.3 goals per match lead La Liga. For context, Real Madrid ranks second with 2.0.
  • That’s not a fluke either. Barca leads La Liga with 9.9 xG and 14 big chances, per Fotmob.

Getafe is just two points behind Barcelona, but it hasn’t faced any strong opponents yet. On top of that, the side’s +2 goal differential shows how close each match has been.

The best team Getafe played on the road this season was Valencia. The visitors lost that match 3-0 and were thoroughly outplayed.

Expect a stronger side like Barcelona to be able to replicate that success this Sunday.

Bet on La Liga soccer

Serie A prediction

Matchup: Udinese vs. AC Milan (Sept. 20, 2:45 p.m. ET)

Udinese to win or draw (-110): Milan is a pretty big favourite to win this match (-113), and I don’t agree with the price.

  • Udinese is 3-0 against this wager in Serie A this season.
  • The side most impressively beat Inter Milan on the road, 2-1, in Week 2.
  • On the other side, Milan has had a loss this season and sits behind Udinese on the table.

Neither of these teams concedes much, with the sides combining to allow 1.0 goals per game. That means this match should be played at a slow pace, with goals most likely being hard to come by.

In my opinion, that gives value to the sizable home underdog that’s exceeding expectations in the early goings.

Newcastle United vs. Barcelona SGP predictions Sept. 18: Bet on Raphinha and Olmo at +320

Newcastle United vs. Barcelona predictions

Barcelona and Newcastle United meet for a Champions League showdown at St James’ Park on Thursday.

The pregame narrative: Barcelona won every major domestic trophy last season but bowed out of the UCL after a shocking last-minute defeat to Inter Milan. The Spanish giants are favoured to begin their redemption tour against a struggling Newcastle side.

Newcastle United vs. Barcelona predictions

Parlay: Over 2.5 goals | Raphinha to score or assist | Olmo over 0.5 shots on target (+320)

Over 2.5 goals (-215): Barcelona is more than capable of covering this line on its own.

Hansi Flick’s side is coming off a 6-0 win in La Liga against Valencia and has scored three-plus goals in eight of its last nine games.

This is where Barcelona ranked among Champions League teams last year, per FotMob:

  • 1st in goals per match (3.1)
  • 2nd in SOT per match (7.0)
  • 3rd in possession (61.9%)
  • 3rd in xG (32.9)

Newcastle is just 1-2-1 through four Premier League fixtures, playing in a trio of snoozers and a 3-2 barnburner against Liverpool.

The hosts will probably want to make this a low-event match, but that’s easier said than done against Barcelona.

Champions League betting markets

UCL SGP legs

Raphinha to score (-121): Barcelona is loaded with elite talent up front, and last year, Raphinha was the best of the bunch.

He set a Champions League record with 22 goal contributions (13 goals, nine assists), reaching that milestone in 14 matches.

The Brazilian forward will be the focal point of Barca’s attack on Thursday with Lamine Yamal sidelined.

Yamal’s absence is a big hit, but Raphinha still has all-world goalscorer Robert Lewandowski at his side.

The Polish striker has scored two goals in three La Liga matches this year.

Olmo over 0.5 shots on target (-108): At the time of writing, it’s unclear if Olmo will start Thursday’s game.

It would be a plus if he were on the field from the get-go, but the Spanish midfielder is used heavily as a super sub in matches where he doesn’t start.

Olmo has played at least 45 minutes in three of four games for Barcelona this year, clearing this line three times.

He ranks in the 86th percentile for shot attempts per 90 minutes (3.08), compared to positional peers in men’s Big 5 Leagues, UCL, and UEL over the last 365 days, per FBRef.

Champions League picks and predictions Sept. 17: Bet on PSG to win convincingly, Kane to score

I’m targeting two powerhouses in Wednesday’s Champions League picks.

The pregame narrative: PSG kicks off its Champions League title defence at home against Atalanta and should win convincingly. Elsewhere, look for Harry Kane to do damage when Bayern Munich hosts Chelsea.

Champions League predictions

Best bet: PSG halftime/fulltime (+105)

PSG is still the best team in Europe untill proven otherwise.

Luis Enrique’s side dominated this competition last season and carried that momentum into the FIFA Club World Cup, dispatching some elite teams before suffering a shocking 3-0 loss to Chelsea in the final.

Here are some of PSG’s most impressive performances from those runs:

  • UCL semifinal: 1-0 win vs. Arsenal
  • UCL semifinal: 2-1 win vs. Arsenal
  • UCL final: 5-0 win vs. Inter Milan
  • CWC R16: 4-0 win vs. Inter Miami
  • CWC QF: 2-0 win vs. Bayern Munich
  • CWC SF: 4-0 win vs. Real Madrid

PSG led at halftime and won in all but one of those fixtures (against Bayern), so I can’t imagine it struggling against a good but not great Serie A side, even without Ousmane Dembele.

Atalanta is 1-2-0 through three domestic fixtures, only beating the bottom-feeding Lecee.

PSG is 8-1-1 in its last 10 fixtures with a +16 goal differential.

Key stat: PSG led the Champions League in match rating (7.29), xG (36.4), and big chances (71), and was second in clean sheets (seven) during its title run, per FotMob.

Bet on the Champions League

Best Bayern Munich vs. Chelsea bet

Kane to score (-134): Kane has a long history against Chelsea, dating back to his days at Tottenham.

The English striker scored six goals in 16 London derby appearances, which, by his standards, left a lot to be desired.

But Kane has found another gear with Bayern Munich, and I expect him to punish his longtime rival on Wednesday.

  • Kane has scored 93 goals in 101 games with Bayern Munich, including eight through five appearances this season.
  • Last season, he netted 11 goals in 13 Champions League fixtures.
  • Bayern Munich is unbeaten in 34 straight UCL group stage home games and is 8-1-1 in its last 10 home games against English sides.
  • The Bavarians were second in xG in the UCL last year despite losing in the quarterfinal.

All of those stats lead me to believe Bayern Munich will soundly defeat Chelsea at home. You could back it on the moneyline at -163, but I think this is a better option.

Matchup: Tottenham vs. Villarreal

Best bet: Tottenham to win (-112)

Tottenham has looked like a top-four EPL club through four matches.

  • The side is 3-0-1 with a +7 goal differential (second best behind Liverpool).
  • The loss was an ugly 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth, but I can overlook it when the wins have been so dominant.
  • That was the only goal the Hotspur have conceded, with the three victories coming with a clean sheet.
  • One of those wins was a 4-0 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Villarreal is 2-1-1 in La Liga but still feels a tier below the top teams like Barcelona and Real Madrid.

That was demonstrated in a 2-0 loss to Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

Villarreal was thoroughly outplayed on the road, giving up 63% of the possession.

I can’t see the side walking into the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and coming away with points.

Key stat: Tottenham is one of three Premier League teams that have allowed just one goal this season.

  • It has yet to play a top-six team and holds a +2 goal differential. That shows how close each contest has been despite the side having three wins.

According to Fotmob, Arsenal has the biggest average goal differential in the EPL through four games (+2.0).

The Gunners’ lone defeat this season came against Liverpool, which is excusable considering the Reds will be a top EPL and UCL contender this season.

Bilbao just isn’t in the same conversation. Arsenal should have no problem picking up three points on the road.

Manchester City vs. Manchester United SGP predictions Sept. 14: Back Haaland to score in +360 ticket

Manchester City vs. Manchester United predictions

The first Manchester derby of the season headlines this weekend’s EPL action.

The pregame narrative: Neither side is off to a great start this season, so this could be a chance for a potential winner to get back on track. Erling Haaland has been on fire to start his campaign, even with his club’s poor play.

Manchester City vs. Manchester United predictions

Parlay: Over 2.5 goals | Haaland to score | Diallo over 0.5 shots on target (+360)

Over 2.5 goals (-177): Both Manchester City and Manchester United currently sit outside of the top 10 in the EPL standings.

Despite that, there is some serious offensive potential here.

  • Man U led the EPL in xG going into this weekend (6.8).
  • Man City is not far behind with 5.8 xG.

The Citizens have Haaland, one of the most dangerous strikers in world soccer, while the Red Devils prioritized offence this transfer window, spending $170+ million on attackers.

These clubs don’t shine on defence, either. Both sides have conceded 4.0 or more xG through three matches.

This has all the makings of an exciting back-and-forth match filled with scoring.

Manchester City vs. Manchester United betting markets

EPL SGP legs

Haaland to score (-127): Haaland had a down season in 2024, but he looks to be back in top form. That’s a scary thing for opposing defenders.

  • The Norwegian forward has contributed 3.9 of City’s 5.8 xG (leads EPL).
  • Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo ranks second (2.7 xG), and he’s played one more match.
  • Haaland has recorded 14 shots and three goals in his first three Premier League games.

It doesn’t mean as much, but he’s coming off a match with Norway in which he scored five goals.

Haaland ranks in the 90th percentile or better for touches in the attacking penalty area (6.40) and shots per 90 (3.64).

Diallo over 0.5 shots on target (+110): Diallo has worked his way into the starting 11 for United and is continuously getting more minutes from manager Ruben Amorim.

  • Matchday 1: 36 minutes, one shot on target
  • Matchday 2: 51 minutes, two shots (one on target)
  • Matchday 3: 90 minutes, three shots (one shot on target)

As you can see, he is 3-0 against this line and is naturally getting more offensive chances with more playing time.

Diallo ranks in the 85th percentile among midfielders for shot-creating actions per 90 (4.85), according to fbref.com. This stat tracks the final two offensive actions leading to a shot.

He’s an offensive minded midfielder that should have good looks at goal on Sunday.

The pre-matchday narrative: A heavyweight tilt between reigning FIFA Club World Cup champions Chelsea and German powerhouse Bayern Munich headlines the action on Wednesday. After that, Barcelona heads to St James’ Park to take on a struggling Newcastle side.

  • Juventus has been great defensively since appointing Igor Tudor last season. The squad is currently on a four-game unbeaten run, picking up a 2-1 win over Dortmund in a club friendly in August.

  • Liverpool made some massive splashes in the transfer window, acquiring Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, and Hugo Ekitike. The Reds were already stacked to begin with and are deserved favourites at Anfield.

  • Bayern Munich averaged the second-most xG in the Champions League last year, despite bowing out in the quarterfinal. The Bavarians are unbeaten in 34 straight home games (32-2-0) in the group/league stage of the UEFA Champions League.
