EPL Matchday 11 picks and predictions: Take the under at Anfield, back Arsenal over Chelsea

EPL Matchday 11 picks

I’ve got picks for the two biggest EPL fixtures on Matchday 11.

The pregame narrative: On Saturday, first-place Liverpool hosts Aston Villa and I’m taking the under. After that, bet on Arsenal to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Best Bet: Liverpool vs. Aston Villa under 3.5 goals (-136)

Embed: #99592

Arne Slot has been working magic to begin his tenure as Liverpool’s manager, with an 8-1-1 record through Matchday 10.

His Reds have only allowed six goals (the fewest in EPL) and are also a perfect 4-0-0 in the Champions League with just one goal conceded. Led by the big Dutchman Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool’s back line has been nearly impossible to crack.

Aston Villa locked in a Champions League spot last season thanks to a stout defence and while things haven’t been great this year, I still have faith in the Lions to tighten things up.

Unai Emery’s team has conceded the eighth-most goals so far but that doesn’t tell the whole story.

Four of those just came against Tottenham and Aston Villa also has the sixth-fewest expected goals against, per FB Ref.

Villa only has three goals in its last four games and I can’t see it breaking out against Liverpool. So the risk would be that the Reds offence carries the load but I think a healthy Villa backline can find its form in an important game.

Key stat: Six of Aston Villa’s last eight games across all competitions have fallen under this total.

Quick pick

Arsenal to win (+150): Arsenal and Chelsea both sit seven points behind Liverpool for the table lead with identical 5-3-2 records.

A win for either team will be crucial in keeping pace with the Reds and I think Arsenal, which was a pre-season title favourite, gets the job done.

Mikel Arteta’s team only has two wins in its last four games across all competitions but it appears Declan Rice and Kai Havertz will be suiting up this weekend.

That’s a big boost for the Gunners, especially considering Cole Palmer’s status for Chelsea is up in the air.

Arsenal has dominated this fixture in recent years with a 7-1-1 record against its London rival in its last nine games across all competitions.

Picks made at 1:09 p.m. on 10/31/24.

Best Champions League prop bets Matchday 4: Erling Haaland and Jonathan David have value to score

Champions League prop bets

Erling Haaland and Jonathan David are the targets of my Matchday 4 prop bets for Champions League action.

Pregame narrative: I’m taking Haaland to add to his impressive goal total. I also see value in backing the red-hot David to score for Lille against Juventus.

Best bet: Haaland to score (-154)

Haaland has been the world’s best pure goalscorer for a few years now, and he just keeps getting better.

The 24-year-old Norwegian has 14 goals in 13 games across all competitions this season. He continues to make scoring in soccer look easy.

In his last UCL match, Haaland scored a brace against Sparta Prague and faces similar competition on Tuesday. Sporting CP are no walk in the park but the side is far from a European giant.

Manchester City ranks first in shots (17.7), goals (3.0) and completed passes (670.3) per game and the offence usually finishes on the boot of Haaland.

The one game he was held off the score sheet was against Inter Milan, who are among the favourites to win the tournament.

Sporting is just not up to the same level as Inter. I can picture Haaland doing what he does best and bagging a goal.

Key stat: Haaland has 44 goals in 43 career Champions League appearances.

Quick pick

David to score (+185): This is definitely the riskier play, but the Canadian is a goal-producing machine for his club.

David has 10 goals in 13 games across all competitions this season for Lille.

Juventus is a top club but if anyone is a threat to score against them, it’s David. He has five shots on target across his last two UCL matches, resulting in three goals.

The target man has scored in seven of his last nine games overall and I like his value even against Juventus.

Picks made at 3:14 p.m. on 11/04/2024.

Best Champions League prop bets Matchday 4: Erling Haaland and Jonathan David have value to score

Champions League prop bets

Erling Haaland and Jonathan David are the targets of my Matchday 4 prop bets for Champions League action.

Pregame narrative: Any time I can get Haaland to score at plus money, I’ll take it without thinking twice. I also see value in backing the red-hot David to score for Lille against Juventus.

EPL Matchday 10 picks and predictions: Bet on Arsenal and Chelsea to win this weekend

EPL Matchday 10 picks

Two away sides are featured in my EPL Matchday 10 picks.

The pregame narrative: Arsenal has fallen out of form lately but I expect a bounce-back performance against Newcastle United this Saturday. On Sunday, I like Chelsea to beat a struggling Manchester United side.

Best Bet: Arsenal to win (+100)

Arsenal’s last two EPL results were a loss to AFC Bournemouth and a draw with second-place Liverpool.

In between those games, the Gunners won 3-0 in the League Cup and 1-0 over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.

Arsenal is a strong offensive squad, ranking fifth in goals for (1.9) and shots created (5.6) per game.

This feels like a must-win if the Gunners want to catch up with Man City and Liverpool and I predict a strong response from the London club.

Newcastle is in even poorer form than its counterpart, going winless in its last five EPL matches (0-2-3)

The side has only scored nine goals in as many games and currently holds a -1 goal differential on the season. For context, Arsenal is +7.

Key stat: In its last meeting with Newcastle, Arsenal won 4-1 while recording eight shots on goal.

Quick pick

Chelsea to win (+160): Chelsea and Manchester United meet on Sunday and the odds are just about even but I like the momentum Chelsea brings into Matchday 10.

The London club has been the much better side this season, going 5-2-2 while currently sitting in fifth in the Premier League table.

Meanwhile, Man U sits in 14th and has scored a disastrous eight goals in nine matches. Only Crystal Palace (17th) and Southampton (20th) have scored fewer.

Chelsea has a +8 goal differential which is miles better than The Red Devils’ -3 differential. Even though this game is at Old Trafford, I have no faith in the home team.

Picks made at 3:39 p.m. on 10/31/24.

Matchday 4 Champions League picks and predictions: Inter Milan should get the best of Arsenal

Champions League picks

Full Champions League Matchday 4 betting markets

Prediction: Red Star Belgrade vs. Barcelona Over 3.5 goals between
When: Nov. 6: 3:00 p.m.

Barcelona will arrive at Rajko Mitic Stadium in Belgrade licking its chops after outscoring its opponents 21-to-2 over a recent five-match stretch, including a 4-0 drubbing of Real Madrid.

After a disappointing loss to Monaco to open Champions League play, Barcelona rebounded to defeat BSC Young Boys and Bayern Munich by a combined 9-to-1 scoreline.

Raphinha has led the Barca attack with four goals and one assist through three UCL fixtures.

Conversely, Red Star Belgrade enters with its defensive efforts in the Champions League being akin to a screen door in a submarine.

Through three matches, it has conceded 11 goals and scored just twice. It is dealing with a few injuries, but healthy players probably wouldn’t have reversed any results outside of perhaps its home opener against Benfica.

The vast discrepancy in talent between each side is enough to envision Barcelona scoring at will versus Belgrade.

Champions League picks: Brest should stay hot

Prediction: Brest to beat Sparta Prague
When: Nov. 6: 3:00 p.m.

After a 2-1 victory over Sturm Graz in the club’s first-ever Champions League fixture, Brest defeated RB Salzburg 4-0 before drawing 1-1 with Bayern Leverkusen in its most recent UCL fixture.

The Brest attack has succeeded against weaker teams which could be the case here. Abdallah Sima and Ludovic Ajorque have been the main reason with three goals and two assists, respectively.

They’ve been critical in lifting Les Pirates to seven points in three matches, only two behind the competition’s leaders.

Following its qualification through the UCL playoff qualifiers, Sparta Prague defeated RB Salzburg 3-0 on Matchday 1 before drawing Bayern Leverkusen 1-1 and being trounced 5-0 by Manchester City.

For Prague, the match will be its third in eight days.

Defenders Imanol Garcia de Albeniz and Elias Cobbaut transferred to Prague during the summer but due to injuries, have combined to make just one appearance. Neither is expected to play against Brest.

The matchup between two of the more unheralded clubs competing in the Champions League will provide each with a platform to showcase their abilities on the world stage.

Though Brest will be travelling to Prague, expect the Cinderella story from the northwest of France to overrun an out-of-form opponent.

Matchday 4 SGP

Prediction: Inter Milan to win and Over 2.5 goals
When: Nov. 6: 3:00 p.m.

Arsenal travels to the San Siro for its fourth match in just 11 days.

Through three Champions League fixtures, Arsenal is one of five teams to have not conceded a single goal. However, key defenders Jurrien Timber and Gabriel are questionable after picking up injuries versus Liverpool, while summer arrival Riccardo Calafiori remains weeks away.

Martin Odegaard also remains unlikely as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury.

Inter Milan is also playing its fourth match in 11 days when it lines up versus Arsenal.

Also similar to Arsenal, Inter is one of the five Champions League which hasn’t conceded, including a 0-0 draw with Manchester City on the opening matchday.

Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez lead the strike force, having each scored once through their first three UCL fixtures.

After a congested run of fixtures for both squads and injuries to Arsenal’s backline, expect the Gunners to implement a game plan focused on containing Inter Milan’s wide attack.

The contrast between Mikel Arteta’s hybrid 4-2-3-1 system and Inter manager Simone Inzaghi’s 3-5-2 will be on full display as each side looks to spring attacks on the flanks from what is sure to be a crowded midfield.

Player to pop: Dusan Vlahovic

Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic has begun the campaign capitalizing on each opportunity opposing defences have provided.

The Serbian striker has scored twice and supplied an assist through the first three matches, though he’ll hope to bounce back after a disappointing game against Stuttgart.

With fellow attacker Nicolas Gonzalez potentially returning from injury and Vlahovic in the midst of a strong run of form, expect Juventus to pin the stern Lille defence back while targeting its star striker in the penalty area.

Prediction: Manchester City vs. Southampton over 3.5 goals
When: Oct. 25: 10:00 a.m.

Embed: #98058

Manchester City leads the league with 19 goals over its first eight matches. The defending English champions are led by all-world striker Erling Haaland, who has scored 10 of their 19 goals despite failing to hit the back of the net in the last three.

City is finding ways to win after injuries to Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne, even if it hasn’t been easy, most recently scoring the winner at Wolves in the final seconds of stoppage time.

Southampton owns the second-worst defensive record in the Premier League, conceding 18 goals over its first eight matches. As porous as the Southampton defence has been to begin the season, its attacking unit has been equally inept.

The Saints have scored just six goals, led by Cameron Archer’s two over his five appearances. Manager Russell Martin isn’t usually one to park the bus, but given their early struggles and this being a trip to the Etihad, that may be the best route to success.

Similar to City’s prior opponents, Southampton will lean on counterattacks to get Archer and Co. a good chance or two.

Expect Manchester City to repeatedly break down the deep-lying Southampton backline.

Premier League picks: Back Villa to win

Prediction: Aston Villa to beat Bournemouth
When: Oct. 26: 10:00 a.m.

Embed: #98059

Saturday’s matchup between fourth-place Aston Villa and 11th-place Bournemouth at Villa Park boasts a mouthwatering line in favour of the home side.

Aston Villa enters the match unbeaten over its last seven Premier League fixtures. Over that span, it has outscored opponents 13-to-7 on aggregate. Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran have combined for nine goals with the latter’s four goals all coming from the bench.

After beating a 10-man Fulham side 3-1, Villa hosted Bologna in a midweek Champions League matchup before facing the Cherries.

With the likes of Amadou Onana, Jacob Ramsey, Tyrone Mings, John McGinn, and Ezri Konsa each having returned from injury in the past week or two, Villa’s depth will come in key during a brutal scheduling stretch.

Bournemouth comes to Villa Park full of confidence after defeating a 10-man Arsenal squad 2-0. The Cherries are paced by Antoine Semenyo, who has had a bit of a breakthrough to begin the season, scoring three goals and assisting once.

Villa has a busy stretch of matches, but it doesn’t have to travel and its depth should come in key against a Bournemouth team perhaps feeling too good about itself after last week’s win.

Matchday 9 SGP

Prediction: Arsenal and Liverpool to draw and Under 2.5 goals
When: Oct. 27: 12:30 p.m.

Embed: #98060

Arsenal and Liverpool are two more English teams facing a gruelling run of games which involves three straight weeks of midweek matches.

After falling to Bournemouth following yet another red card, Arsenal played Shakhtar Donetsk in a midweek Champions League showdown. Mikel Arteta will be tasked with determining a different starting XI with William Saliba out due to suspension.

Combined with questions on the fitness of Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard, Arsenal may approach things a bit safer than usual.

Embed: #98061

Liverpool has enjoyed a positive beginning to the season, as evidenced by its position atop the table. It dispatched Chelsea 2-1 in its previous fixture and had to travel to Germany to play RB Leipzig on Wednesday.

The Reds have conceded just three goals over their first eight league matches, owing much of their defensive success to the midfield ranks of Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister.

Expect two somewhat tired teams vying for position in the title race to probe one another cautiously and not drop points.

Player to pop: Bryan Mbeumo

Mbeumo has scored six of Brentford’s 14 goals this season and has goals in three of the last four.

He’s played almost every minute in league action and is on penalty duty, meaning he should easily reach double-digit goals this season.

While he surprisingly doesn’t have an assist, that should change shortly given his role on set pieces and his history (at least six assists during all five of his seasons with Brentford).

Meanwhile, Brentford’s opponents this weekend, Ipswich Town, has leaked goals at the third-worst rate in the Premier League, conceding 16 times.

Making things worse for a team that will be threatened by relegation all season is that Ipswich is battling injuries on its back line.

Best Champions League prop bets Matchday 3: Expect Kane to score, Vlahovic to contribute in opposing third

Champions League props

Two strikers contribute to my Champions League Matchday 3 prop bets.

Best bet: Kane to score (+100)

Kane’s four UCL goals lead the competition and he has eight goals in seven games for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.

He went on a recent four-game goalless drought but bounced back with a hattrick against VfB Stuttgart on the weekend.

Before the cold spell, Kane scored 10 goals in the previous four games. When he’s hot, he’s hot, so now is an opportune time to buy low.

The Englishman has 10 shots on goal in two Champions League appearances and the volume should be there again.

Barcelona is great at scoring but has kept just four clean sheets in 12 games across La Liga and the Champions League.

This game is proving hard to pick a side but if Barcelona slips up and allows a goal or two, there’s no better bet than Kane to get on the scoresheet.

Key stat: Kane has 12 goals in 14 Champions League games since joining Bayern Munich.

Quick pick

Valhovic 2+ shots on target (-154): Juventus’ striker is no stranger to letting shots go.

Vlahovic cleared this line in three of his last four appearances and has four shots through two Champions League games.

The Serbian international attempted 24 shots across his last four starts for Juventus leading to five goals, so it’s clear the gameplan is to feed the target man and let him do the rest.

I’m also keen on backing a player that’s trending up and there’s no hotter striker around than Vlahovic right now. He should be looking to goal with every opportunity he gets.

Valhovic over 3.5 shots (-129): Juventus’ striker is no stranger to letting shots go.

Vlahovic cleared this line in six of his last seven appearances and has 10 shots through two Champions League games, clearing this total in both.

The Serbian international attempted 24 shots across his last four starts for Juventus leading to five goals, so it’s clear the gameplan is to feed the target man and let him do the rest.
