Top European soccer picks and predictions Dec. 14: Expect big game from Inter Milan’s Marcus Thuram

Soccer picks Dec. 14

I have three plus-money picks to share for this weekend’s loaded European soccer slate.

The pre-weekend narrative: In England, I expect Aston Villa to continue its win streak over West Ham, a side in the relegation battle. Also on Sunday, look for Marcus Thuram to contribute in the final third for Inter Milan.

Check out this weekend’s best European soccer picks and predictions for games on Dec. 14, featuring a best bet for Alaves vs. Real Madrid.

Soccer picks: Dec. 14

Alaves vs. Real Madrid (Dec. 14, 3 p.m. ET)

Best bet: Under 2.5 goals (+110)

Real Madrid has played a lot of soccer over the past few weeks, and at the time of writing, it is currently playing Manchester City in the Champions League.

That’s an important fixture that should be heavily prioritized over this Sunday’s match with Alaves.

Meaning Los Blancos could start a lot of subs to give some of their normal starters a breather in their upcoming match.

Either way, Alaves should be up to the task of limiting Madrid’s offence.

That’s because it is among Spain’s best defensive sides. Alaves allows the fourth-fewest goals against (1.0 per match).

-> Bet on Alaves vs. Real Madrid

And it scores even less. Alaves scores 0.9 goals per game, which also ranks in the bottom five.

Last Sunday, Real Madrid was shut out, 2-0, at home by Celta Vigo. Though I don’t have faith in Alaves scoring multiple goals, I think the side can replicate the defensive effort shown by another mid-table team.

Key stat: Alaves has a 10-5 record on this under in La Liga this season.

EPL prediction

Matchup: West Ham vs. Aston Villa (Dec. 14, 9:00 a.m. ET)

Aston Villa to win (+102): Aston Villa has all the momentum ahead of this matchup.

  • The side has won five straight matches, catapulting into third in the Premier League.
  • That includes beating Arsenal 2-1 last weekend. That was just the Gunners’ second loss all season.

On the other side, there’s West Ham, the 18th-place team with three wins so far.

Things have been tough for the Hammers, who own the third-worst goal differential in England (-12). They also have a measly 0-5-3 record against teams inside the top 10.

I don’t want to overthink this one, so I’ll back Aston Villa to pick up a sixth straight win at plus money.

-> Bet on Sunday’s EPL matches

Serie A best bet

Matchup: Genoa vs. Inter Milan (Dec. 14, 12:00 p.m. ET)

Thuram to score (+150): Inter is the most explosive team in Serie A, so I want to back one of its top creators.

  • Inter scores 2.3 goals per game, almost a goal more than AC Milan, which scores the second most (1.6).
  • Thuram has four goals and an assist in nine Serie A matches, but he caught fire recently. He has three goals in his last three games.
  • It was about time Thuram started producing. He is extremely dangerous, ranking in the 96th percentile for shot-creating actions per 90 (any action that leads directly to a shot).

That brings me to his opponent, Genoa. The side allows the fourth-most goals per game (1.5).

Everything points to a big offensive performance from Inter, and I like the value on Thuram getting involved.

Champions League Matchday 6 picks Dec. 10: Back Haaland to score against Real Madrid, Arsenal to win handily

Champions League Matchday 6 picks

A titanic matchup between Real Madrid and Manchester City headlines Wednesday’s Champions League fixtures.

The pregame narrative: Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe are both scoring at a historic pace, but the latter might be sidelined after missing Tuesday’s training with leg discomfort. Haaland is suiting up, though, and I like his chances of scoring in Madrid.

Champions League Matchday 6 picks

Best bet: Haaland to score (-134)

Haaland is putting up video-game-like numbers this year, but what else is new?

  • 15 goals in 15 Premier League games
  • 5 goals in 5 Champions League games
  • 13 goals in 5 World Cup qualifier games

The Norwegian striker is on a bit of a cold streak right now, with just one goal in his last four starts across all competitions. But it hasn’t been for a lack of effort.

Haaland generated 3.2 xG in those four meetings, per FBRef, while taking 12 shots.

-> Don’t miss out — bet on Haaland vs. Real Madrid

He ranks in the 96th percentile for non-penalty goals per 90 and in the 95th percentile for non-penalty xG per 90, compared to positional peers in the Men’s Big 5 Leagues, UCL and UEL over the last year.

Oh, and he takes penalties as well.

Real Madrid missed out on hardware last year because of its defensive structure, and it has struggled to keep the ball out of their net lately.

Xabi Alonso’s squad suffered a shock 2-0 loss to Celta Vigo in La Liga on Sunday, and gave up three goals in a win over Olympiacos in its last UCL fixture.

Overall, Real has conceded eight goals in its last five games.

Key stat: Haaland has scored 13 goals in his last 14 UCL games.

-> Bet on Wednesday’s Champions League matches

Club Brugge vs. Arsenal best bet

Arsenal half-time/full-time (-110): The Gunners have begun the annual tradition of dwindling their Premier League lead after picking up just three points in their last three domestic fixtures.

Man City is now right on its tail heading into Christmas. But Arsenal still tops the UCL table with a perfect 5-0-0 record and a tournament-best +13 goal differential.

It ranks second in FotMob match rating (7.30), has four clean sheets, and has only conceded once all tournament.

Mikel Arteta’s squad is levels clear of Club Brugge, which sits 27th out of 36 teams in this competition and holds a 1-1-3 record.

This should be a start-to-finish rout for the North London club.

Champions League Matchday 6 odds, schedule and betting notes: Bayern a heavy favourite at home, Man City eyes upset vs. Real Madrid

Champions League Matchday 6 odds

Champions League Matchday 6 is nearly upon us, and with it comes a couple of notable games.

The Matchday 6 narrative: Can Liverpool stop the skid? After starting its season 5-0-0 in the Premier League, the club sits ninth in its domestic table. The Reds’ upcoming match won’t be easy, as they face an Inter Milan side with two UCL runner-ups in the past four years. On Wednesday, two perennial juggernauts take the pitch as Manchester City look to upset Real Madrid.

Champions League Matchday 6 odds and key fixtures

  • Is this finally Inter’s year? The club’s next league phase match, against Liverpool, should be a tough one. But the Reds have been flat lately, going 3-2-4 in their last nine games, which means it could be the right time for Inter to strike.
  • Liverpool’s recent struggles are well known, but they are still an incredibly talented club. The reigning EPL champs could use a bounce-back effort here.

Embed: #121782

  • Can Real Madrid win a potential shootout? City’s Erling Haaland, who’s arguably the best striker in the world, has 15 goals and three assists through 15 EPL games. Both teams have tremendous talent, but if this turns into a high-scoring match, can Madrid keep up?
  • Manchester City was dominant for years, but recently, that gap has narrowed. The Citizens still have elite firepower, but it’s too soon to tell if they can contend with the juggernauts of the Champions League.

Other notes

  • These Benfica vs. Napoli odds might confuse some people, as the Italian giants are underdogs in Portugal. But Napoli has lost five of its last seven away games across all competitions, and Benfica has scored exactly two goals in four of its last five outings. It makes sense that the home team is favoured in this match.
  • Atletico Madrid is a team filled with world-class talent, and on Wednesday, they face a significantly smaller club in PSV Eindhoven. However, the Dutch team has been dominant this year, going 13-1-1 domestically with a +29 goal differential. PSV beat Liverpool 4-1 on Matchday 5, and Atletico has lost its last two Champions League away games.
  • Chelsea picked up an impressive 3-0 win over Barcelona in its last Champions League match, but recorded just two points in its three EPL fixtures since. The Blues can be had at plus money to beat an Atalanta side currently sitting 12th in Serie A with a pedestrian 3-7-4 record.

Champions League Matchday 6 predictions: Back Inter Milan vs. Liverpool, Michael Olise to contribute

Champions League Matchday 6 predictions

The Champions League is back, and I have picks on two European giants playing on Tuesday.

The pregame narrative: Inter Milan hosts Liverpool and I think the Italian side can pick up three points against its English foe. Before that, look for Michael Olise to contribute offence when Bayern Munich plays Sporting Lisbon.

Champions League Matchday 6 predictions: Dec. 9

Best bet: Inter Milan to win (+128)

After winning the EPL in 2024-25, Liverpool is facing a season-long hangover as it struggles to put together wins.

In fact, the Reds only have one win in their past six matches. That includes losing 4-1 to PSV in their most recent Champions League fixture.

Liverpool is now 3-0-2 in the UCL league phase, which puts the side in 13th place.

Now, let me turn my attention to Inter. The Italian club is second in Serie A with the best goal differential in the league (+19).

-> Bet on Inter Milan vs. Liverpool

Inter is ahead of Liverpool in the Champions League table. It is tied for second with four wins and a loss.

I Nerazzurri also have a distinct advantage playing at home. They have won eight of their past nine home games.

Meanwhile, Liverpool has just one win in its past six away fixtures, losing four of those matches straight up.

Key stat: Inter has the fourth-best average match rating in the Champions League (7.21), ahead of sides like PSG and Bayern Munich.

Embed: #122005

-> Bet on Tuesday’s Champions League matches

Bayern Munich vs. Sporting Lisbon best bet

Olise to score or give an assist (-137): Harry Kane is the Batman of Bayern’s attack, but he is -435 to score or give an assist.

That brings me to his Robin, Olise.

In 28 matches across all competitions this season, the Frenchman has 11 goals and 10 assists.

I wanted to find someone on the Bayern side to back against Lisbon’s mediocre defence.

The Portuguese side has conceded in four of five UCL matches this season despite having a weak schedule so far.

-> Wager on the UCL league phase at NorthStar Bets

Napoli was its best opponent, and the Italian side managed to win 2-1 on the road.

Bayern’s offence should be able to replicate that effort and then some. The Bundesliga leaders have scored 49 goals in 13 games in Germany and are averaging 3.0 goals per match in the Champions League.

Olise leads the charge as the best creator in the final third. He could find the back of the net or do what he does best and feed Kane in the penalty area for an easy finish.

Top European soccer picks and predictions Dec. 7: Back Canadian Jonathan David to contribute vs. Napoli

Soccer picks Dec. 7

One Canadian striker contributes to this weekend’s European soccer picks.

The pre-weekend narrative: Jonathan David should see his opportunity increase now that one of Juventus’ top strikers will be sidelined for the foreseeable future. In Spain, expect a lot of goals between Real Madrid and Celta Vigo.

Check out this weekend’s best European soccer picks and predictions for games on Dec. 7, featuring a best bet for Fulham vs. Crystal Palace.

-> Join NorthStar Bets & wager on European soccer

Soccer picks: Dec. 7

Real Madrid vs. Celta Vigo (Dec. 7, 3 p.m. ET)

Best bet: Over 3.5 goals (+100)

Real Madrid is second in La Liga but is showing some cracks defensively. The side has conceded at least a goal in four of its past six matches.

The away team, Celta Vigo, has scored at least one goal in 19 of 21 matches across all competitions this season.

Because of that, I believe Celta Vigo can score here, but if not, there’s potential for Los Blancos to cover this total on their own.

-> Bet on Real Madrid vs. Celta Vigo

  • Real Madrid ranks second in La Liga behind Barcelona with 32 goals scored. When Celta Vigo played Barcelona, the side lost 4-2.
  • When it comes to xG, Real Madrid leads Spain with 35.7.

Kylian Mbappe leads Real Madrid’s fierce attack with 16 goals, double the amount of anyone else in La Liga.

If Celta Vigo can contribute even one goal here, I have confidence that Los Blancos can take care of the rest. But don’t count out the possibility of Real Madrid scoring four or more here.

Key stat: This over is 7-7 in Real Madrid’s past 14 games.

EPL prediction

Matchup: Fulham vs. Crystal Palace (Dec. 7, 11:30 a.m. ET)

Under 2.5 goals (-132): Crystal Palace is currently in the top five in the EPL standings thanks to an outstanding defence.

  • It’s allowed 11 goals in 14 matches played this season. Only first-place Arsenal has conceded fewer.
  • The side has seven clean sheets so far.

With that comes a rather inconsistent offence. Palace is tied for the second-fewest goals scored among the top 10 teams.

That brings me to the home team, Fulham. The Cottagers are in 15th place but have been above-average defensively.

Fulham has conceded the seventh-fewest xG (18.0), per Fotmob. For reference, Crystal Palace has conceded 16.7.

This has all the makings of a slow-paced game between two defensively sound teams that can struggle on offence.

Even one side having a sluggish performance should be enough for this under to cash.

-> Bet on Sunday’s EPL matches

Serie A best bet

Matchup: Napoli vs. Juventus (Dec. 7, 2:45 p.m. ET)

Jonathan David to score or give an assist (+125): David has gotten off to a slow start with Juventus, but with the injury to Dusan Vlahovic, there should be more minutes available for the Canadian.

And a chance is all David needs. He’s proven he can be productive at the highest level, recording at least 20 goals/assists in his final three seasons with Lille in Ligue 1.

There is a lot more competition for playing time at Juventus, but there’s no doubt he can create goals when given the opportunity.

Over the past year, David ranks in the 88th percentile among forwards for shot-creating actions per 90 (3.19). That stat tracks any action leading directly to a shot.

I’m not sure why the Canadian isn’t being used by his new team. He was one of Europe’s most clinical strikers across all competitions over recent seasons.

With the added opportunity, I expect David to shine this Sunday.

Inter Miami vs. Vancouver Whitecaps MLS Cup predictions: Best soccer bets for 2025 final

MLS Cup predictions

Inter Miami and the Vancouver Canucks play for the MLS Cup on Saturday.

The pre-weekend narrative: It is expected to be an epic final with lots of scoring between two of the best offensive teams in the league. Lionel Messi and Miami are the odds-on favourite to win the club’s first-ever MLS Cup.

Check out these MLS Cup predictions for the final on Dec. 6, featuring a prop bet on Tadeo Allende.

-> Join NorthStar Bets & wager on the MLS Cup

MLS Cup predictions

Best bet: Over 3.5 goals (-110)

Let’s start with the underdogs. Vancouver is a potent attacking side, averaging 2.0 goals per game. That was tied for the second most in the MLS this season.

Including the playoffs, the Whitecaps have scored at least a goal in 17 straight matches. The side hasn’t been shut out since July 12.

So I believe they can contribute to this total by scoring against Miami. Among playoff teams in the East, the Herons allowed the second-most goals this season.

-> Bet on Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami vs. Vancouver Whitecaps

But Messi and Co. are elite up top, scoring an MLS-best 2.5 goals per match. The side possesses so much firepower that it can — and often does — cover this total on its own.

Key stat: Inter Miami has scored four or more goals in six of its past eight games.

MLS best bets

Allende to score (+150): One name other than Messi that does damage for Miami is Allende.

He is a lot less known, but the forward knows how to play with his fellow Argentine.

Look at what Allende has done in the playoffs for Miami:

  • Nov. 29 vs. NYC: Three goals
  • Nov. 23 vs. CIN: Two goals
  • Nov. 8 vs. NSH: Two goals, one assist

-> Find all MLS Cup final player props at NorthStar Bets

He’s been absolutely cooking in the biggest games of the season. Vancouver prides itself on strong defence, but there’s little hope for any team trying to contain Miami’s dominant offence.

After scoring seven goals in his first 24 games this season, Allende has recorded 12 goals in the past 12 matches.

The only player more effective in the entire MLS right now is Messi. But, he’s -167 to score, so I’d rather take a shot on Allende, who’s white hot ahead of the final.

Inter Miami vs. Vancouver Whitecaps betting preview

The favourites: Inter Miami (-132)

MLS Cups were promised when Messi joined in 2023, and now the Argentine has a chance to deliver.

Inter Miami went 19-8-7 this season, one point back of first place in the Eastern Conference. The club carried that dominance into the playoffs:

  • Round 1: Beat Nashville in best-of-three series (8-3 aggregate score)
  • Conference semis: Beat FC Cincinnati (4-0)
  • Conference finals: Beat New York City FC (5-1)

Messi leads the way with six goals and five assists in five games, while the defence has held opponents to just one goal in the past three games.

-> Don’t miss out — make your MLS Cup bets here!

The underdogs: Vancouver Whitecaps (+295)

Vancouver’s road to the final was a tad rockier.

The Whitecaps beat FC Dallas in penalties to sweep the Round 1 series and then needed penalties again to topple LAFC in the conference semis.

They took down San Diego FC 3-1 in the conference finals, though, and head into this match with just one loss in their last 13 games.

Muller, Germany’s top goalscorer and assist provider in the Champions League, has had an immediate impact.

The forward has eight goals and four assists in 11 starts for Vancouver.

  • Conference semis: Beat FC Cincinnati (4-0)
  • Conference finals: Beat New York City FC (5-1)

Messi leads the way with six goals and five assists in five games, while the defence has held opponents to just one goal in the past three games.

The underdogs: Vancouver Whitecaps (+325)

Vancouver’s road to the final was a tad rockier.

The Whitecaps beat FC Dallas in penalties to sweep the Round 1 series and then needed penalties again to topple LAFC in the conference semis.

They took down San Diego FC 3-1 in the conference finals, though, and head into this match with just one loss in their last 13 games.

Muller, Germany’s top goalscorer and assist provider in the Champions League, has had an immediate impact.

The forward has eight goals and four assists in 11 starts for Vancouver.
