NFL Week 7 betting guide: Props, parlays and best bet recommendations for the weekend

NFL betting guide

We’re almost halfway through the NFL season and things are heating up as each game gets increasingly more important.

The Chiefs and Vikings are coming off a bye and remain the last two undefeated teams, both entering the week with 5-0 records. And both have huge games (Chiefs at 49ers, Vikings at home vs. Lions).

Check out our Week 7 NFL betting guide, featuring staff picks and predictions to help you make the best wagers.

NFL betting guide: Week 7

The Broncos thrashed the Saints, 33-10, on Thursday Night Football and improved to 4-3-0 on the season.

In the early hours on Sunday, Jacksonville will play its second game in London, England, as the Patriots make their way across the pond for the first time this season. Both teams are 1-5-0 and in desperate need of a win.

There are plenty of other exciting games to look forward to, including the pivotal NFC North showdown at 1 p.m. ET between the Lions and Vikings.

Then at 4:25 p.m., the Chiefs travel to Levi’s Stadium and put their perfect record on the line vs. the 49ers.

Later on, things don’t get any easier for the struggling Jets as they face the 4-2-0 Steelers in Pittsburgh before the Ravens and Buccaneers meet in an exciting first leg of a Monday Night Football doubleheader.

Here are some quick betting notes from the slate:

  • Highest total: Panthers vs. Commanders (51.5)
  • Biggest spreads: Bills (-9.5); Commanders (-9.5) vs. Rams (-7)
  • Five teams have odds of +200 or longer to win (Patriots, Browns, Titans, Panthers, Raiders)

Lines and odds are listed as of 3:39 p.m. ET on Oct. 18. For the latest, check out our NFL Week 7 markets.

Now, see how our staff is wagering on this slate.

Week 7 betting predictions

If you need a one-stop shop for spread bets, we have you covered.

Our NFL Week 7 ATS picks, via Avery Perri, Jordan Horrobin, Spencer Closs and Chris Toman, provide a recommendation against the spread for every game.

We have plenty of other picks, too.

Underdogs: Drake Maye had an eventful first game as the Patriots starter. Read why Perri likes New England to win this weekend, plus another pick from Sunday’s slate.

Parlay picks: One moneyline favourite and two alternate underdog spreads make up this +315 parlay.

Prop picks: Saquon Barkley has a potential revenge game incoming. Find out how Perri is backing him against the Giants, plus two more prop bets.

TD picks: Nick Chubb makes his long-awaited return and has a juicy matchup in his season debut. Read why Chubb and two other players are good bets to find the end zone this week.

Chiefs vs. 49ers same-game parlay picks: A Super Bowl LVIII rematch headlines the late afternoon slate as Kansas City looks to remain perfect against the 49ers. Closs is expecting points as part of this +335 wager.

SNF and MNF predictions

Jets vs. Steelers same-game parlay picks: New York wreaks of desperation, but Steven Psihogios predicts a Jets win in Week 7. Two other picks help form his +335 ticket for Sunday Night Football.

Ravens vs. Buccaneers prop picks: Tampa Bay’s secondary is struggling to stop opposing receivers. Psihogios is eyeing a pair of Baltimore pass catchers to have a game in primetime.

NFL Week 7 ATS staff picks: Predictions against the spread for every game

NFL betting guide

We’re back to a 15-game slate this week with only two teams on bye.

The loaded schedule features two Monday Night Football contests and a rematch of last season’s Super Bowl between the Kansas Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers. Kansas City hasn’t lost a game since Week 16 last year.

Check out our NFL Week 7 ATS picks for predictions on every game.

Thursday Night Football pick

Broncos vs. Saints (Thursday, Oct. 17: 8:15 p.m.)

Embed: #97559

NorthStar Bets line: Denver -2.5
Perri says: This game is going to be ugly. A pair of 24-year-old rookies start with Spencer Rattler going up against Bo Nix. Denver has at least looked competent with Nix under centre lately while New Orleans has been in a freefall since starting 2-0 (and most of that was with Derek Carr at QB). In a defensive battle, I’ll take the team with the fourth-best scoring and total defence.
Pick: Broncos -2.5

NFL Week 7 ATS picks: The early Sunday slate

Patriots vs. Jaguars (Sunday, Oct. 20: 9:30 a.m.)

Embed: #97560

NorthStar Bets line: Jaguars -5.5
Perri says: The Jaguars have only won two of their last 12 games and I’m supposed to believe they’re 5.5 points better than the Patriots? Trevor Lawrence looks lost and Doug Pederson is operating on borrowed time. Drake Maye might be a rookie but I can’t put any faith in Jacksonville right now.
Pick: Patriots +5.5

Bengals vs. Browns (Sunday, Oct. 20: 1 p.m.)

Embed: #97564

NorthStar Bets line: Bengals -5.5
Perri says: Cincinnati eked out a win against an awful Giants team to improve to 2-4 and now has a divisional “test” in the Browns. Spoiler alert: Neither team is good. I’ll bank points with the home side and hope Nick Chubb can rumble against a defence that has allowed the seventh-most points per game and ranks 30th in defensive EPA per rush.
Pick: Browns +5.5

Lions vs. Vikings (Sunday, Oct. 20: 1 p.m.)

Embed: #97565

NorthStar Bets line: Vikings -1.5
Horrobin says: The Vikings are unbeaten, they’re at home and they’re coming off a bye. But the Lions have found their footing — scoring 40-plus points in consecutive games — and I’d rather back an elite team with points than a surprise upstart. Detroit is 10-2 ATS on the road since last season and has covered in its past seven matchups against Minnesota.
Pick: Lions +1.5

Texans vs. Packers (Sunday, Oct. 20: 1 p.m.)

Embed: #97563

NorthStar Bets line: Green Bay -3
Horrobin says: C.J. Stroud’s passer rating outdoors (87.6) is notably worse than it is overall (100.2), and I think the Lambeau Field crowd will be fired up after last week’s stellar performance from the home side. Green Bay is 7-4 ATS at home since last season and has covered this number in all four of its wins.
Pick: Packers -3

Dolphins vs. Colts (Sunday, Oct. 20: 1 p.m.)

Embed: #97566

NorthStar Bets line: Indianapolis -3
Closs says: Miami has scored 25 total points in three games since Tua Tagovailoa’s injury and I don’t see a bye week helping the quarterback struggles. The Colts are 3-1 in their last four and have scored 20 or more points in each of those games. Even with the potential return of Anthony Richardson, I don’t see the Dolphins being able to keep up.
Pick: Colts -3

Eagles vs. Giants (Sunday, Oct. 20: 1 p.m.)

Embed: #97561

NorthStar Bets line: Philadelphia -3.5
Closs says: Malik Nabers’ availability is important. The rookie receiver is back practicing this week but still has hurdles to climb to play on Sunday. That said, I have no faith in the Eagles either way. All three of their wins have come by five points or fewer and they failed to cover this spread in two away games.
Pick: Giants +3.5

Seahawks vs. Falcons (Sunday, Oct. 20: 1 p.m.)

Embed: #97562

NorthStar Bets line: Atlanta -3
Toman says: These teams are going in opposite directions. The Seahawks have dropped three in a row while Atlanta is riding a three-game winning streak. Seattle has stumbled after a soft schedule to start the year and its defence has gotten torn up. The Falcons’ offence is clicking behind Kirk Cousins and I like them to at least push this (win by a field goal) in a shootout.
Pick: Falcons -3

Titans vs. Bills (Sunday, Oct. 20: 1 p.m.)

Embed: #97567

NorthStar Bets line: Buffalo -9.5
Toman says: Tennessee’s offence inspires little confidence but the team has covered this spread in four of five games. Buffalo, on the other hand, is 0-3 against this number since demolishing Jacksonville in Week 3. That said, the Bills return home — where they’re undefeated — after a difficult three-week road trip and I expect Buffalo to win this one comfortably.
Pick: Bills -9.5

NFL 4 p.m. slate

Panthers vs. Commanders (Sunday, Oct. 20: 4:05 p.m.)

Embed: #97569

NorthStar Bets line: Washington -8.5
Closs says: The Panthers’ defence is atrocious. It allows the sixth-most yards (384.7) and the most points per game (33.8). Rookie QB Jayden Daniels should feast once again for the Commanders. The second overall pick ranks fourth in the NFL in quarterback rating (107.1) and has led his offence to the second-most points per game (29.7).
Pick: Commanders -8.5

Raiders vs. Rams (Sunday, Oct. 20: 4:05 p.m.)

Embed: #97568

NorthStar Bets line: Los Angeles -6.5
Perri says: The Raiders have lost three of four since upsetting the Ravens and Davante Adams is now a Jet. That’s not great. But I can see Las Vegas putting together a respectable effort against the Rams. L.A. is 1-4 and hasn’t covered this spread in eight straight dating back to last season. Cooper Kupp might return but there is still an Aaron Donald-sized hole on the defence.
Pick: Raiders +6.5

Make your NFL Week 7 predictions

Chiefs vs. 49ers (Sunday, Oct. 20: 4:25 p.m.)

Embed: #97570

NorthStar Bets line: San Francisco -1.5
Perri says: Patrick Mahomes is 11-1-1 ATS as an underdog. But San Francisco is no pushover and Kansas City will be missing a handful of weapons. The Niners came short of winning the Super Bowl last year and will want revenge. Even without Christian McCaffrey, I think they can outpace this injured Chiefs offence.
Pick: 49ers -1.5

Sunday and Monday night ATS picks

Jets vs. Steelers (Sunday, Oct. 20: 8:20 p.m.)

Embed: #97571

NorthStar Bets line: New York -2.5
Toman says: I’m not flocking to the Jets after the much-needed Adams trade. The bottom line is this unimpressive team shouldn’t be favoured on the road against one of the NFL’s top defences. Pittsburgh is 4-2, losing each game by a field goal. A QB change from Justin Fields to Russell Wilson leads to some uncertainty, but it should have no impact on the defence, which has been winning this team games.
Pick: Steelers +2.5

Ravens vs. Buccaneers (Monday, Oct. 21: 8:15 p.m.)

Embed: #97572

NorthStar Bets line: Baltimore -3.5
Closs says: Since starting 0-2, the Ravens have won four straight. The offence looks electric, tallying the most yards per game (460.3) which feels like trouble for the Buccaneers. Tampa Bay is allowing the fourth-most yards per game and is coming off a week where the defence allowed 27 first-half points to Spencer Rattler and the Saints. I fully expect Lamar Jackson to have an MVP-like performance on Monday.
Pick: Ravens -3.5

Chargers vs. Cardinals (Monday, Oct. 21: 9 p.m.)

Embed: #97573

NorthStar Bets line: Los Angeles -2.5
Toman says: The Chargers haven’t scored or beaten any good teams, but the Cardinals don’t fit that bill. Arizona is a mess defensively and its offence will be tasked with going up against a Chargers team allowing an NFL-low 13.2 points per game. J.K. Dobbins is coming off a monster 25-carry effort and should shred one of the worst run defences in the NFL.
Pick: Chargers -2.5

Staff Week 6 + season-long records: Toman: 8-6 (46-41-5) | Closs: 8-6 (44-43-5) | Psihogios: 8-6 (39-48-5) | Horrobin: 7-7 (38-49-5) | Perri: 6-8 (36-51-5)

The league’s only undefeated teams (Chiefs, Vikings) are on bye but there’s no shortage of quality matchups this weekend.

NFL betting guide: Week 6

The 49ers re-rook first in the NFC West with a shootout victory over the Seahawks to kick off Week 6.

There are plenty of other big games on tap, including a 1 p.m. ET banger between the Ravens and Commanders. Reigning MVP Lamar Jackson takes on rookie standout Jayden Daniels for DMV supremacy.

Later, the Lions and Cowboys battle in Jerry World before the Bills and Jets close the action with a huge Monday Night Football showdown.

Robert Saleh is out as Jets head coach and the Bills have lost two straight in embarrassing fashion. A win propels either team to the top of the division, while a loss leaves serious question marks.

Here are some quick betting notes before diving into the meat and potatoes of the slate:

  • Highest total: Lions vs. Cowboys (52)
  • Biggest spreads: Eagles (-9); Ravens (-7) vs. Texans (-6.5)
  • Five teams have odds of +200 or longer to win (Cardinals, Browns, Patriots, Commanders, Panthers)

We have plenty of other picks, too.

Underdogs: Bo Nix and the Broncos have turned things around after a tough start to the season. Read why Closs likes them to beat the Chargers plus an upset overseas.

Parlay picks: One moneyline, one ATS pick, and one over/under make up this +349 parlay headlined by two AFC North teams.

Prop picks: Daniels is on a fast track to win Offensive Rookie of the Year. Find out how Horrobin is backing him against the Ravens, plus two more prop bets.

Lions vs. Cowboys same-game parlay picks: The last time the Lions and Cowboys met, fans were treated to a thriller where CeeDee Lamb went off. Perri expects more fireworks from the wide receiver as part of this +360 wager.

TD picks: Drake London is buzzing and now gets to go up against a soft Panthers defence. That sounds like a recipe for success. Read about London and two more players.

Thursday Night Football pick

49ers vs. Seahawks (Thursday, Oct. 10: 8:20 p.m.)

Embed: #96941

NorthStar Bets line: San Francisco -3.5
Toman says: Both teams are coming off terrible Week 5 losses and the 49ers remain without game-changer Christian McCaffrey. But even at home, I’m not touching the Seahawks, who’ve had one of the easiest schedules in the NFL and were pummeled for 42 points against the only contender they faced. Tonight will also mark their third game in 11 days.
Pick: 49ers -3.5

NFL Week 6 ATS picks: The early Sunday slate

Jaguars vs. Bears (Sunday, Oct. 13: 9:30 a.m.)

Embed: #96942

NorthStar Bets line: Chicago -2
Horrobin says: It’s unfair that this London game counts as a home game for the Bears. The Jaguars are the ones who should feel at home, playing for the 11th time across the pond since 2013. Chicago is 3-0 ATS as a favourite this year, but all of those games were played at Soldier Field. I’m buying in on Jacksonville, which racked up a season-best 37 points last week.
Pick: Jaguars +2

Cardinals vs. Packers (Sunday, Oct. 13: 1 p.m.)

Embed: #96943

NorthStar Bets line: Packers -5
Perri says: Which version of the Cardinals are we going to see on Sunday? I’m banking on the one that played the Bills close, blew out the Rams and upset the 49ers. Kyler Murray has been solid while Jordan Love has looked a little shaky since returning from injury. The Packers are 0-3 against this line with Love under centre this season.
Pick: Cardinals +5

Browns vs. Eagles (Sunday, Oct. 13: 1 p.m.)

Embed: #96945

NorthStar Bets line: Philadelphia -9.5
Perri says: The Browns are bad but are they 9.5-point underdog bad? Yeah, probably. Deshaun Watson ranks dead last in EPA per play and has failed to throw for 200-plus yards all season. A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith both return for the Eagles and I can see them having a statement game after a much-needed bye week.
Pick: Eagles -9.5

Texans vs. Patriots (Sunday, Oct. 13: 1 p.m.)

Embed: #96946

NorthStar Bets line: Houston -7
Perri says: Drake Maye makes his first NFL start on Sunday against a Texans defence with the ninth-highest pressure rate in the league. Maye doesn’t have many weapons to work with and his offensive line is terrible. This is a tough spot for a rookie. C.J. Stroud and Co. should cruise to a win in Foxborough.
Pick: Texans -7

Colts vs. Titans (Sunday, Oct. 13: 1 p.m.)

Embed: #96949

NorthStar Bets line: Tennessee -2.5
Horrobin says: Michael Pittman Jr. is out this week, and Jonathan Taylor isn’t trending positively after missing last week. The Titans, meanwhile, are far more rested coming off the bye and had an encouraging result in Week 4 (a 19-point win at Miami). Tennessee’s No. 1 total defence should make it hurt for Indy’s shorthanded offence.
Pick: Titans -2.5

Buccaneers vs. Saints (Sunday, Oct. 13: 1 p.m.)

Embed: #96951

NorthStar Bets line: Tampa Bay -3.5
Toman says: Both teams have been up and down early on but I believe in the Buccaneers’ offence a lot more. That’s especially true with quarterback Derek Carr facing a multi-week absence. New Orleans opened with back-to-back 40-point games but has been held under 15 in two of the past three weeks. It shouldn’t be any easier with a rookie QB (Spencer Rattler) set to make his NFL debut.
Pick: Buccaneers -3.5

Commanders vs. Ravens (Sunday, Oct. 13: 1 p.m.)

Embed: #96952

NorthStar Bets line: Baltimore -6.5
Horrobin says: Jayden Daniels has already drawn comparisons to reigning MVP Lamar Jackson, and now we get a side-by-side comparison. Daniels’ Commanders, who are on a four-game win streak, have the No. 1 scoring offence in the NFL (31.0 PPG). Baltimore has only covered this spread once this season.
Pick: Commanders +6.5

NFL 4 p.m. slate

Chargers vs. Broncos (Sunday, Oct. 13: 4:05 p.m.)

Embed: #96953

NorthStar Bets line: Los Angeles -2.5
Horrobin says: After two one-score losses to start the year, Denver has three victories in a row — including a pair of wins as the underdog. Bo Nix is making better decisions and giving his strong defence a chance to thrive. This game has the lowest over/under of the week, and I feel good backing the home side with points.
Pick: Broncos +2.5

Steelers vs. Raiders (Sunday, Oct. 13: 4:05 p.m.)

Embed: #96954

NorthStar Bets line: Pittsburgh -3
Closs says: The Steelers allow the second-fewest points (14.6/game) and held four of five opponents to 20 points or less. Las Vegas is making a QB change as Aidan O’Connell will start in place of the struggling Gardner Minshew. The Raiders rank 22nd in points scored (19.2/game) and I expect Pittsburgh’s defence to dominate.
Pick: Steelers -3

Make your NFL Week 6 predictions

Falcons vs. Panthers (Sunday, Oct. 13: 4:25 p.m.)

Embed: #96955

NorthStar Bets line: Atlanta -6
Toman says: The Falcons’ three wins have come by nine combined points. Andy Dalton had the Panthers looking respectable in consecutive weeks but it was against two last-place teams (Bengals, Raiders). Carolina followed that up with its third 20-plus point loss. Kirk Cousins has the Falcons’ offence humming and that should be the difference against the Panthers (1-4 ATS), who allow an NFL-high 33.0 PPG.
Pick: Falcons -6

Lions vs. Cowboys (Sunday, Oct. 13: 4:25 p.m.)

Embed: #96956

NorthStar Bets line: Detroit -3
Horrobin says: Who’s excited to see Detroit’s rushing offence against a weak, depleted Dallas front? Coming off a bye, the Lions should be well prepared to win in the trenches against a Cowboys defence that allows the fourth-highest rush success rate. Detroit is 3-1 ATS this year, while Dallas is 0-2 ATS at Jerry World.
Pick: Lions -3

Sunday and Monday night ATS picks

Bengals vs. Giants (Sunday, Oct. 13: 8:20 p.m.)

Embed: #96957

NorthStar Bets line: Cincinnati -3.5
Perri says: Joe Burrow is playing at an MVP pace yet the Bengals are 1-4. Over the past three weeks, Cincinnati has averaged 35 points per game with close losses to some good teams. The Giants’ defence is sneaky-good but this is a must-win game for the Bengals. I expect them to right the ship on SNF.
Pick: Bengals -3.5

Bills vs. Jets (Monday, Oct. 14: 8:15 p.m.)

Embed: #96958

NorthStar Bets line: Buffalo -2.5
Perri says: Two teams that desperately need a win meet on MNF. New York fired head coach Robert Saleh and I expect the team to respond. Josh Allen hasn’t looked himself lately with back-to-back stinkers and the Jets’ defence turned him over five times in two games last season.
Pick: Jets +2.5

Staff Week 5 + season-long records: Toman: 7-6-1 (38-35-5) | Closs: 4-9-1 (36-37-5) | Horrobin: 6-7-1 (31-42-5) | Psihogios: 7-6-1 (31-42-5) | Perri: 5-8-1 (30-43-5)

Online blackjack tips and strategies every player should know

glossary online casino

Online blackjack is one of the most popular and enduring casino games, combining elements of skill, strategy, and luck. Here, we will explore some online blackjack tips and strategies every player should know to help you get the most out of your experience.

Its appeal lies in its relatively low house edge and the ability for players to make decisions that directly influence the outcome.

While blackjack is simple to learn, mastering it requires a deep understanding of the game, proper strategy, and self-discipline.

Online blackjack tips and strategies

Before diving into the tips and strategies, it’s crucial to understand the game itself. In blackjack, the goal is to beat the dealer by having a hand that totals closer to 21 without exceeding it. Each card has a specific value:

  • Number cards (2-10) carry their face value.
  • Face cards (King, Queen, Jack) are worth 10.
  • Aces can be either 1 or 11, depending on which value benefits the player most.

You’re dealt two cards, as is the dealer, and the player can choose to “hit” (take another card) or “stand” (keep their current hand). The dealer follows fixed rules: they must hit until they reach a hand total of 17 or higher.

With this basic understanding, let’s explore strategies that will help you get more enjoyment from online blackjack.

1. Learn Basic Online Blackjack Strategy

One of the most effective ways to lower the house edge in blackjack is to follow a basic strategy chart. Basic strategy is a mathematically proven approach that tells you the optimal play for every possible hand based on your cards and the dealer’s upcard. It outlines when to hit, stand, double down, or split pairs to maximize your odds of winning.

For example, if you have a hand totalling 16 and the dealer is showing a 10, the basic strategy suggests hitting because the dealer is likely to have a strong hand. On the other hand, if the dealer is showing a 6 and you have 12, basic strategy recommends standing, as the dealer is more likely to bust.

Memorizing a basic strategy chart is essential, as it reduces the house edge to as low as 0.5 percent.

2. Play Responsibly

One of the most important elements of playing online blackjack, or any online gambling game, is proper bankroll management. Set a budget before you begin playing and stick to it. Don’t chase losses, and avoid raising your stakes when you’re on a losing streak.

A common recommendation is to never bet more than 1-2% of your total bankroll on a single hand. For example, if you have $500 to play with, keep your bets between $5 and $10 per hand. This approach ensures that you can withstand fluctuations in luck without depleting your funds too quickly.

3. Use Bonuses and Promotions

One of the advantages of playing online blackjack is the bonuses and promotions offered to players. These can include welcome bonuses, deposit matches, golden chips, or cashback offers. Taking advantage of these promotions can give your bankroll a boost and allow you to play longer without risking as much of your own money.

However, it’s essential to read the terms and conditions of each bonus carefully. And make sure the bonus applies to blackjack, as many offers are tailored more toward slot players.

4. Know When to Split and Double Down (check)

Knowing when to split pairs and double down can significantly improve your odds in online blackjack. Splitting occurs when you’re dealt two cards of the same value (such as two 8s or two 9s), and you have the option to split them into two separate hands.

Splitting Strategy:

  • Consider splitting Aces and 8s. Splitting Aces gives you a chance to form two strong hands, while splitting 8s helps you escape from a weak 16.
  • Avoid splitting 10s or 5s. Two 10s make 20, which is a strong hand, while two 5s give you a better chance of reaching 21 than splitting them.

Doubling Down Strategy:

  • Consider doubling down when you have a total of 11 and the dealer is showing a card lower than 10. You have a strong chance of getting a 10 and reaching 21.
  • Consider doubling down on 9 or 10 when the dealer’s upcard is weak (2-6), as there’s a high likelihood the dealer will bust.

5. Understand the Different Versions of Online Blackjack

There are many variations of blackjack available online, each with slightly different rules that affect your strategy. For example:

  • European Blackjack usually only allows the dealer to draw one card until players have completed their hands, while in American Blackjack, the dealer can check for blackjack if showing an Ace or 10-value card.
  • Pontoon is a popular variant where players aim for a hand totalling 21, but certain card combinations (like Aces and 10s) give bonuses.

Before you play, familiarize yourself with the specific rules of the version you’re playing and how they impact the odds and strategy. Some versions might have different rules for splitting, doubling down, or even payout rates for blackjack (such as 6:5 instead of the standard 3:2).

6. Play for Fun, Not Just Profit

Finally, remember that online blackjack should be a fun experience. While using strategy can improve your odds and lead to more wins, it’s important to play within your means and enjoy the game itself.

Set realistic expectations—there will be ups and downs, but staying level-headed and enjoying the process is key to long-term enjoyment.

Conclusion

Online blackjack is a game of skill, strategy, and patience. By understanding basic strategy, managing your bankroll wisely, taking advantage of bonuses, and knowing when to split and double down, you can significantly increase your chances of winning.

However, it’s essential to play responsibly, stick to reputable operators, and avoid chasing losses.

With the right mindset and strategy, online blackjack can be both rewarding and entertaining.

Online Blackjack Glossary: Key Terms Every Player Should Know

Online blackjack glossary.

Blackjack is one of the most popular card games in both online and land-based casinos. In this online blackjack glossary and key terms article, we’ll explore the most common terms and concepts that every online player should know.

To play effectively, whether you’re a beginner or an experienced player, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with the language of the game.

Understanding blackjack terminology not only improves your gameplay but also enhances your ability to make better decisions during hands.

Online Blackjack Glossary and Key Terms

1. Hit

The term “hit” means requesting an additional card to be added to your hand in order to get closer to a total of 21. You can keep hitting until you either stand, bust, or reach 21.

Example: If you have a hand of 10 and 6, and you ask for another card (hit), you might receive a 4, bringing your total to 20.

2. Stand

To “stand” means that you are satisfied with your hand and do not wish to receive any more cards. After you stand, the play moves to the dealer or other players.

Example: If you have a hand totalling 18, you might choose to stand and let the dealer finish their hand.

3. Bust

“Bust” refers to exceeding the total of 21, resulting in an automatic loss for the hand. If you bust, the dealer wins the round, regardless of their hand.

Example: If your hand totals 15 and you hit a 10, your total becomes 25, and you bust.

4. Double Down

Doubling down allows you to double your initial bet in exchange for committing to stand after receiving one additional card. This option is often used when you have a strong chance of improving your hand with one card.

Example: If you have a total of 11, you may choose to double down, receive one more card (say a 10), and then stand with a total of 21.

5. Split

A split occurs when you are dealt two cards of the same value (e.g., two 8s), and you have the option to split them into two separate hands. Each hand receives one additional card, and you can continue playing both hands independently with separate buy-ins.

Example: If you’re dealt two Aces, you can split them into two hands, giving yourself two strong starting positions to potentially hit 21.

6. Surrender

Some blackjack games offer the option to surrender. This allows you to forfeit half of your bet and withdraw from the hand if you feel the odds are stacked against you. Surrendering can be a strategic move to minimize losses in situations where you’re unlikely to win.

Example: If you’re dealt a 16 and the dealer is showing a 10, you might choose to surrender, sacrificing half your bet to avoid a probable loss.

7. Insurance

Insurance is a side bet offered when the dealer’s upcard is an Ace. The insurance bet is half your original wager, and it pays 2:1 if the dealer has blackjack. However, taking insurance is generally not recommended as it increases the house edge.

Example: If you bet $10 and the dealer shows an Ace, you can place an insurance bet of $5. If the dealer has blackjack, you’ll win $10 from the insurance bet, but lose your original wager.

8. Blackjack (Natural)

A blackjack, also known as a “natural,” is when you are dealt an Ace and a 10-value card (10, Jack, Queen, or King) as your first two cards. A blackjack beats all other hands unless the dealer also has one, resulting in a tie.

Example: If you’re dealt an Ace and a King, you have blackjack and automatically win, usually with a payout of 3:2.

Online Blackjack Key Terms

9. Push

A push occurs when both the player and the dealer have hands of equal value, resulting in a tie. In this case, no one wins, and your original bet is returned to you.

Example: If you and the dealer both have a hand totalling 18, it’s a push, and you neither win nor lose.

10. Upcard

The dealer’s “upcard” is the card that is dealt face-up and visible to all players. The upcard provides valuable information for determining your strategy during the hand.

Example: If the dealer’s upcard is a 6, it’s considered a weak card, and many players will stand on lower totals or double down.

11. Hard Hand

A “hard hand” is a hand that does not contain an Ace or a hand where the Ace is counted as 1. Hard hands are more rigid in terms of flexibility, as the value of the cards cannot be adjusted as easily.

Example: A hand of 10 and 8 is considered a hard 18, and the total cannot be adjusted by counting an Ace as 1 or 11.

12. Soft Hand

A “soft hand” is any hand that contains an Ace, which can be counted as either 1 or 11. Soft hands give players more flexibility, as they can adjust the total based on the next card drawn.

Example: A hand with an Ace and a 7 is a soft 18, because the Ace can count as either 1 or 11. If you hit and draw a 9, the Ace would then count as 1, giving you a hard 17.

13. House Edge

The “house edge” refers to the mathematical advantage that the casino has over players in any given game. In blackjack, the house edge is relatively low, especially when basic strategy is applied. In many versions of blackjack, the house edge can be as low as 0.5%.

Example: Over time, a house edge of 0.5% means that for every $100 bet, the casino expects to win an average of $0.50.

14. Shoe

The “shoe” is the device used to hold multiple decks of cards in blackjack games. Casinos use shoes to speed up gameplay and make it harder for card counters to track cards. Most online blackjack games use virtual shoes.

Example: A six-deck shoe is common in many blackjack variations.

15. Even Money (check)

Even money is a type of payout offered when a player has blackjack, and the dealer’s upcard is an Ace. Instead of risking a push, the dealer offers the player a 1:1 payout on their bet. Taking even money is essentially the same as taking insurance and is generally not recommended.

Example: If you have a blackjack, and the dealer shows an Ace, you might be offered even money. If you accept, you’ll win 1:1, regardless of whether the dealer has blackjack.

16. High Roller

A high roller is a player who places large bets in blackjack games, often playing at VIP or high-stakes tables. High rollers may receive special perks from the casino, such as exclusive bonuses or personalized service.

Example: A high roller might place $1,000 bets per hand, compared to the standard $5 or $10 bet in a regular game.

Conclusion

Familiarizing yourself with these blackjack terms will not only improve your understanding of the game but also give you a solid foundation for applying more advanced strategies. Whether you’re playing casually or aiming to develop a more strategic approach, knowing these key terms will enhance your overall online blackjack experience.

So the next time you sit down at the virtual table, you’ll be able to play confidently and communicate like a seasoned pro.

Anything else I should know?

  • Qualifying win is calculated as total win (win + stake of the winning bet) across all seats divided by total bet across all seats taken by a player. • The above calculation is used to account for side bets, splits, double downs and pushes also.
  • If a player has a consecutive win streak and receives a win (win + stake of the winning bet) equal to one time (1x) of the total Qualifying Bet, the Consecutive Qualifying Wins (as defined below) streak will be broken and player will earn points equal to that streak. • Consecutive Qualifying Wins streak is defined as sequence of Qualifying wins by a player without any losses occurring between them.
  • If a player fails to have a qualifying win, this resets their streak and they will earn points relevant to their highest consecutive win streak before that loss.
