NFL Week 2 staff best bets: Expect Bengals to roll at home, Justin Fields to run all over the Bills

NFL Week 2 best bets

Our staff’s Week 2 best bet recommendations feature three ATS picks, one moneyline wager, and two player props.

The Week 2 narrative: Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals look to snap a bizarre streak of Week 2 losses and are favoured at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Elsewhere, look for Justin Fields to back up his stellar New York Jets debut with another strong performance.

Check out our NFL Week 2 staff best bets for our favourite picks this weekend.

NFL Week 2 best bets

These NFL Week 2 best bets were provided by NorthStar Bets writers Avery Perri, Spencer Closs and Jordan Horrobin.

ATS picks

Cowboys -5 (-110): The New York Giants didn’t show much promise in Week 1, losing 21-6 against the Washington Commanders.

Russell Wilson completed less than 50% of his passes for 168 yards, and the running backs combined for a measly 30 yards on 10 rushes.

The Cowboys, on the other hand, were competitive against the Philadelphia Eagles and had a legit chance to win on the road. Now, Dallas gets a worse opponent at home, where Dak Prescott is 43-18 in his career.

-Closs

Eagles -1 (-110): I get that it’s a road game for the Eagles, but I really don’t think the reigning champions should have this tight of a line in the Super Bowl rematch.

Philadelphia steamrolled the Kansas City Chiefs in February, scoring the first 34 points of a 40-22 victory. Week 1 wasn’t a great showing for the Eagles, but they still came away with a divisional win. The Chiefs, meanwhile, fell to the Chargers as 3-point favourites.

The Eagles are largely the same team as last year, they have an extra day of rest, and they’re facing a Chiefs offence that could be missing Xavier Worthy (in addition to the suspended Rashee Rice).

-Horrobin

Bengals -3.5 (-106): Burrow has never won a game in Week 2, and Cincinnati looked awful in its opener. But I’m betting on his larger body of work and expect an end to this bizarre trend.

The Bengals were top-10 in total offence, scoring offence, and offensive EPA per play last year, according to RBSDM.com. Jacksonville, meanwhile, ranked last in defensive EPA per pass and went 4-13 with zero wins against playoff teams.

I’m not putting any stock into Jacksonville’s win over the Carolina Panthers in Week 1. Cincinnati is the far better team and should roll.

-Perri

Best moneyline bet

Broncos ML (-120): I’m not interested in overreacting to Week 1, so Daniel Jones and the Indianapolis Colts will have to do more than beat up on the Miami Dolphins to impress me.

Denver was a top-10 scoring team on both sides of the ball in Bo Nix’s rookie year, and the team is expected to be a feisty playoff-calibre squad again. The Broncos are 9-0 SU as favourites since the start of last year.

Nix threw three interceptions in a Week 15 matchup vs. the Colts last year, but the Broncos still emerged with a 31-13 victory.

-Horrobin

NFL Week 2 best bets: Player props

Javonte Williams over 55.5 rushing yards (-118): Dallas used Williams early and often against Philadelphia in Week 1, as the newly-acquired running back turned 15 rushes into 54 yards and two TDs.

Was it the most efficient performance? No, but Philly owns one of the best run defences in football, and the same can’t be said for New York.

The Giants allowed the sixth-most rushing yards per game last season and ceded 220 at 6.9 YPC to the Washington Commanders in Week 1.

No other Cowboys RB had more than four carries in the opener, so I expect Williams to have a healthy workload.

-Perri

Fields over 44.5 rushing yards (-118): Fields looked electric in his New York Jets debut, throwing efficiently while rushing for 48 yards and two touchdowns.

The Jets have the game script to hurt the Buffalo Bills’ defence, courtesy of the Baltimore Ravens last week: A heavy dose of RPOs with Breece Hall and Fields.

I’m not saying that duo is Derrick Henry and Lamar Jackson, but it’s not so far off.

Buffalo gave up 238 rushing yards in Week 1 — 70 to Jackson — and got gashed by Patrick Mahomes for 43 rushing yards in last year’s AFC championship game.

The Bills’ run defence is sieve-like, and Fields has the speed to clear this on a few chunk plays.

NFL Week 1 betting guide: Player prop recommendations, parlay picks and more for the 16-game slate

NFL betting guide

The NFL is back! Football fans are being treated to four primetime matchups in Week 1 and wall-to-wall action on Sunday.

Week 1 at a glance: The NFL is coming out swinging. Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills vs. Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens. The revamped Green Bay Packers vs. the loaded Detroit Lions. And Aaron Rodgers is making his Pittsburgh Steelers debut against the team that released him, the New York Jets.

Check out our Week 1 NFL betting guide, featuring staff picks and predictions for the loaded 16-game slate.

NFL betting guide

Key storylines:

  • Jerry Jones loves it when his Dallas Cowboys are in the spotlight. Well, he got his wish after trading three-time All-Pro pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Packers. The result? Green Bay is favoured against Detroit, which won a league-high 15 games last year.
  • Steelers vs. Jets could not be more popcorn-emoji worthy. Rodgers’ tenure with the Jets was a complete disaster, but the 41-year-old is out to prove he has something left in the tank. Oh, and Justin Fields, who’s now under centre in the Meadowlands, can also call “revenge game” against Mike Tomlin’s group, which cast him aside for Russell Wilson last season.
  • Let’s circle back to the week’s biggest matchup: Ravens vs. Bills. Buffalo went undefeated at home last year and eliminated Baltimore from the playoffs in a nailbiter at Highmark Stadium. The last two MVPs will be eager to make a statement in a Sunday Night Football pick’em.
  • Cam Ward, the 2025 first overall pick, has the toughest landing spot imaginable: a road date with the Denver Broncos. The Tennessee Titans are 8.5-point ‘dogs against last year’s No. 3 scoring defence.

NFL betting hub

Week 1 betting notes

  • Speaking of Ward, rookie quarterbacks making their first start on the road haven’t fared well since the 1970 NFL merger (8-21 straight up, 3-14-2 ATS, per Action Network). JJ McCarthy, while not technically a rookie, is making his first start for the Minnesota Vikings on the road versus the Chicago Bears — on Monday Night Football.
  • Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals need to start this season off on the right foot, but can they? Cincy is 1-4 SU and ATS in Burrow’s season openers. The Bengals are 5-point road favourites in Cleveland.
  • Divisional underdogs are 40-41-2 SU in Week 1 since 2010. Divisional home underdogs are 23-7 ATS in that same span. Cleveland falls into that latter category alongside Seattle, Chicago and Atlanta.
  • Austin Ekeler tops the depth chart in a crowded Washington Commanders running back room. He should be a player to watch against the New York Giants, who allowed the fifth-most rushing and seventh-most receiving yards per game to RBs last year.
  • Last year, favourites went 13-3 SU and 9-7 ATS in Week 1. But that was only the second time since 2019 that favourites came out ahead ATS in the first weekend, also going 9-7 in 2020.

Biggest spreads: Cowboys vs. Eagles (-8.5), Titans vs. Broncos (-8), Cardinals (-6.5) vs. Saints

Highest totals: Ravens vs. Bills (50.5), Bengals vs. Browns (47.5), Buccaneers vs. Falcons (47.5)

NFL betting guide: Week 1 predictions

Week 1 ATS picks: Get ATS predictions for the entire slate, headlined by Ravens vs. Bills on Sunday Night Football.

Week 1 prop picks: A trio of player props from three different Week 1 games. Find out how Avery Perri is betting on Marvin Harrison Jr., David Montgomery and Cedric Tillman.

Ravens vs. Bills SNF picks: Sunday night can’t come soon enough! Buffalo bounced Baltimore from the postseason last year, and revenge is sure to be on Jackson and Co.’s mind. Perri is fading the Bills while backing Derrick Henry.

Week 1 TD picks: Who will find the end zone in Week 1? Closs made three picks, featuring running back Nick Chubb in his first game with the Houston Texans.

Lions vs. Packers SGP picks: Two NFC North rivals start their seasons with a Sunday afternoon clash. Check out this +310 SGP that features RBs Josh Jacobs and Jahmyr Gibbs.

Steelers vs. Jets SGP picks: Who will come out on top in this double-sided revenge game? Perri says Pittsburgh and expects T.J. Watt to be a force on defence.

Ravens vs. Bills SGP picks: It’s a rematch from last year’s AFC divisional round. Steven Psihogios is betting on a bounce back from Mark Andrews in a +650 ticket.

Vikings vs. Bears picks: The J.J. McCarthy bandwagon is full, but Psihogios says not so fast. He’s fading the Minnesota QB and backing Chicago to win on Monday Night Football.

We’ll release more NFL predictions over the weekend. Here’s what you can expect leading into the first Football Sunday of the season!

Sept. 7

  • Ravens vs. Bills TD picks

NFL betting guide: 2025 futures focus

There’s still time to get your futures bets in and get caught up before the 2025 season kicks off. Here’s a good place to start:

NFL season preview: This has everything you need to get dialled in. Freshen up on which rookies to watch, futures markets, offseason moves and more!

Super Bowl best bets: Buffalo has experienced nothing but pain in the playoffs since Allen took over at quarterback, but that doesn’t mean it should be overlooked. Read why this will be the year for Bills Mafia.

MVP & ROTY predictions: Jackson and Allen top the NFL MVP odds board, and for good reason. But our staff is looking elsewhere this season, and they also have three picks on who can take home Rookie of the Year honours.

Embed: #117514

Long shot futures picks: A tight end has never won NFL Offensive Player of the Year. But Horrobin sees a path for that to change. Find out who he’s backing, plus check out a 60-to-1 MVP recommendation.

NFL division winners: Will the AFC West have a new champion in 2025? Our Spencer Closs thinks so. We’re also giving out a four-leg divisional parlay, with juicy 45-to-1 odds.

NFL Week 1 Beat the Spread staff predictions: ATS picks on the 2025 season-opening slate

NFL ATS picks

The NFL season is finally here, and so are our staff against the spread picks.

The latest: Every team has a fresh slate heading into this week’s action, with features 16 games and four nights of prime-time action. Only three matches have spreads north of a touchdown, meaning fans should be treated to some close matchups.

Check out our staff’s Week 1 NFL ATS picks for predictions on every game.

NFL ATS picks: Week 1

NorthStar Bets’ Avery Perri, Jordan Horrobin, Spencer Closs, Chris Toman, and Steven Psihogios offer up their Week 1 NFL ATS picks for all 16 games.

NFL odds as of 11 a.m. ET on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2025.

Thursday Night Football pick

Cowboys vs. Eagles (Thursday, Sept. 4: 8:20 p.m. ET)

NorthStar Bets line: Eagles -8
Perri says: I’ll risk having an egg on my head by taking the Micah Parsons-less Cowboys against the reigning Super Bowl champions. Philadelphia’s offence is sure to put up points, but I think Dak Prescott and Co. can hold serve. In 2022-23, the Prescott-led Cowboys averaged 30.0 PPG in three contests against Philly, going 3-0 against this line. He didn’t play against the Birds last year, which explains the lopsided scores.

Staff picks: Perri (DAL) | Horrobin (PHI) | Closs (PHI) | Toman (DAL) | Psihogios (PHI)

NFL Friday night prediction

Chiefs vs. Chargers (Friday, Sept. 5: 8 p.m. ET)

NorthStar Bets line: Chiefs -3
Toman says: The Chargers were the best ATS team in 2024. Kansas City covered at a below-.500 rate, and five of its 15 wins came by three points or fewer. How much of that is transferable to 2025 remains to be seen, but I don’t like the Chiefs at this number. Not against a hungry divisional rival, which held opponents to the second-fewest points per game last year and added one of the top running backs (Omarion Hampton) of the draft class.

Staff picks: Perri (KC) | Horrobin (LAC) | Closs (LAC) | Toman (LAC) | Psihogios (KC)

NFL ATS picks: The early Sunday slate

Cardinals vs. Saints (Sunday, Sept. 7: 1 p.m. ET)

NorthStar Bets line: Cardinals -6.5
Perri says: The Cardinals imploded down the stretch last season, but they get a soft landing spot against the Saints this week. New Orleans has arguably the worst starting QB in football, Spencer Rattler, and a defence which lost several big names (Marshon Lattimore, Paulson Adebo). The season hasn’t even started, and the Saints are looking toward the 2026 NFL draft. I’ll back an Arizona squad which went 11-6 ATS last year.

Staff picks: Perri (ARI) | Horrobin (ARI) | Closs (ARI) | Toman (ARI) | Psihogios (ARI)

Panthers vs. Jaguars (Sunday, Sept. 7: 1 p.m. ET)

NorthStar Bets line: Jaguars -3.5
Perri says: Bryce Young didn’t quite look like a No. 1 overall pick last year, but he definitely looked like a starting-calibre QB. That’s good enough for me. Young threw for 14 touchdowns and six interceptions after re-regaining the starting job in Week 8, going 7-3 ATS in Carolina’s final 10 games. On the other side, Trevor Lawrence has lost 13 of his last 15 starts. I’ll take a field goal and a hook.

Staff picks: Perri (CAR) | Horrobin (CAR) | Closs (CAR) | Toman (JAX) | Psihogios (JAX)

Bengals vs. Browns (Sunday, Sept. 7: 1 p.m. ET)

NorthStar Bets line: Bengals -5.5
Closs says: There’s no telling how good (or bad) the Bengals’ defence may be, but I have no problem fading the Browns in Week 1. Cleveland had a -177 point differential in 2024, and the addition of Joe Flacco at QB isn’t enough to make me think it has a chance against Joe Burrow and the Bengals’ dynamic offence.

Staff picks: Perri (CIN) | Horrobin (CIN) | Closs (CIN) | Toman (CIN) | Psihogios (CLE)

Embed: #117564

Bet on NFL Week 1

Raiders vs. Patriots (Sunday, Sept. 7: 1 p.m. ET)

NorthStar Bets line: Patriots -2.5
Closs says: While I do expect the Pats to be improved under a sophomore Drake Maye, the Raiders added Geno Smith, which should erase their QB problems. The side scored just 18.2 points per game in 2024 behind Gardner Minshew and Aidan O’Connell, who combined to throw 19 TDs and 16 INTs. A legit starter under centre should make the Raiders much more competitive. New England and Vegas had identical 7-9-1 ATS records last season, but I have more faith in the offseason additions made by the Raiders.

Staff picks: Perri (LV) | Horrobin (LV) | Closs (LV) | Toman (LV) | Psihogios (LV)

Dolphins vs. Colts (Sunday, Sept. 7: 1 p.m. ET)

NorthStar Bets line: Colts -0.5
Closs says: With Tua Tagovailoa starting, the Dolphins are 40-24 overall and 4-0 in Week 1s. He should give Miami a massive QB advantage as the Indianapolis Colts are going with Daniel Jones, at least for the opening game. That gives me enough confidence to back Miami at a pick’em price.

Staff picks: Perri (IND) | Horrobin (MIA) | Closs (MIA) | Toman (MIA) | Psihogios (MIA)

Giants vs. Commanders (Sunday, Sept. 7: 1 p.m. ET)

NorthStar Bets line: Commanders -6
Horrobin says: Washington took a massive step forward last year with Jayden Daniels at the helm, but the team struggled to put away New York in both divisional meetings. The Giants covered this number both times, losing by a combined eight points. I’m excited to see how Abul Carter fits into an already loaded defensive front.

Staff picks: Perri (WSH) | Horrobin (NYG) | Closs (WSH) | Toman (WSH) | Psihogios (NYG)

Steelers vs. Jets (Sunday, Sept. 7: 1 p.m. ET)

NorthStar Bets line: Steelers -3
Closs says: These two teams pulled off a rare QB swap as Aaron Rodgers will start Week 1 for Pittsburgh this season, while Justin Fields finds a new home with the Jets. I don’t necessarily have faith in either signal caller, but I will side with the Steelers’ defence, which allowed the seventh fewest PPG last season (20.8). For context, the Jets allowed 23.8 PPG and arguably got worse on offence. Last year, the Steelers only scored 25+ points once in Fields’ five starts.

Staff picks: Perri (NYJ) | Horrobin (PIT) | Closs (PIT) | Toman (NYJ) | Psihogios (NYJ)

Buccaneers vs. Falcons (Sunday, Sept. 7: 1 p.m. ET)

NorthStar Bets line: Buccaneers -2
Horrobin says: Atlanta won and covered in both matchups against Tampa last year, and now it’ll face a banged-up Bucs squad that is missing Chris Godwin and Jalen McMillan. The Falcons are 5-1 ATS vs. the Bucs over the past three seasons, and Michael Penix has the necessary weapons to keep that going.

Staff picks: Perri (ATL) | Horrobin (ATL) | Closs (TB) | Toman (ATL) | Psihogios (ATL)

NFL 4 p.m. slate

49ers vs. Seahawks (Sunday, Sept. 7: 4:05 p.m. ET)

NorthStar Bets line: 49ers -2.5
Perri says: 49ers -2.5 (-112): Christian McCaffrey is healthy, Robert Saleh is back at defensive coordinator, and the vibes are high in San Francisco. Sam Darnold is under centre for Seattle, and he didn’t handle pressure well down the stretch last year. I expect him to struggle, and the Niners to put up points. San Francisco is 4-1 with a +53 point differential against the Seahawks with CMC in the lineup.

Staff picks: Perri (SF) | Horrobin (SF) | Closs (SEA) | Toman (SF) | Psihogios (SF)

Embed: #117566

Place your bets on the 4 p.m. NFL slate

Titans vs. Broncos (Sunday, Sept. 7: 4:05 p.m. ET)

NorthStar Bets line: Broncos -8.5
Perri says: This game has blowout written all over it. The 2025 No. 1 pick, Cam Ward, is making his first start on the road against a top-three defence in the NFL. Sean Payton should make his life miserable, while Bo Nix seems poised to build on a strong rookie campaign. Last season, Denver won each of its last five home games by an average of 22.2 points.

Staff picks: Perri (DEN) | Horrobin (DEN) | Closs (DEN) | Toman (DEN) | Psihogios (TEN)

Lions vs. Packers (Sunday, Sept. 7: 4:25 p.m. ET)

NorthStar Bets line: Packers -2
Horrobin says: Green Bay’s hype train might be whistling a bit too loudly, but acquiring a player of Micah Parsons’ stature will do that. The Lions had more brain drain than anybody this offseason, losing both coordinators and six assistants. Green Bay went 5-2-1 against this spread at home last season (excluding its meaningless Week 18 loss to Chicago).

Staff picks: Perri (DET) | Horrobin (GB) | Closs (GB) | Toman (DET) | Psihogios (DET)

Texans vs. Rams (Sunday, Sept. 7: 4:25 p.m. ET)

NorthStar Bets line: Rams -3
Toman says: Injuries were a factor, but Houston and C.J. Stroud were lousy to close out last season. In general, Stroud’s sophomore year was a major letdown. His Texans are once again facing injury issues with RB Joe Mixon and WR Tank Dell on the sidelines. The Rams were dangerous down the stretch and gave the Super Bowl-winning Eagles their biggest playoff test. Give me Sean McVay and L.A. at home.

Staff picks: Perri (LAR) | Horrobin (LAR) | Closs (HOU) | Toman (LAR) | Psihogios (HOU)

Sunday and Monday Night NFL ATS picks

Ravens vs. Bills (Monday, Sept. 8: 8:20 p.m. ET)

NorthStar Bets line: Ravens -1
Horrobin says: Until proven otherwise, Buffalo shouldn’t be a home dog against anyone. The Bills have the best home record since the start of the 2021 season (32-7), and they were only underdogs once in that span. Buffalo also beat Baltimore at home in the divisional round last year.

Staff picks: Perri (BAL) | Horrobin (BUF) | Closs (BAL) | Toman (BUF) | Psihogios (BUF)

Embed: #117567

Bet on Sunday Night Football

Vikings vs. Bears (Monday, Sept. 8: 8:20 p.m. ET)

NorthStar Bets line: Vikings -1.5
Horrobin says: Ben Johnson might ascend to be one of the NFL’s next great head coaches, but Kevin O’Connell is already there. O’Connell should outclass his first-year head coaching counterpart, even with the inexperienced J.J. McCarthy under centre. The Vikings, who went 7-5-1 ATS as favourites last year, are 7-1 vs. the Bears since 2021.

Staff picks: Perri (MIN) | Horrobin (MIN) | Closs (CHI) | Toman (CHI) | Psihogios (CHI)

NFL Week 1 staff best bets: Expect McCaffrey’s 49ers to dominate, Hubbard to deliver for Panthers

NFL Week 1 best bets

Our staff has six best bet recommendations for opening week NFL action.

The Week 1 narrative: Is it comeback season for the San Francisco 49ers? Our Avery Perri thinks so and is taking Christian McCaffrey and Co. to roll over the Seahawks in Seattle. Two additional road teams are being backed, as is Canadian Chuba Hubbard of the Carolina Panthers.

Check out our NFL Week 1 staff best bets for our favourite picks this weekend.

NFL Week 1 best bets

NFL Week 1 best bets via NorthStar Bets writers Jordan Horrobin, Spencer Closs and Perri.

Falcons +3 (-127): Atlanta is 5-1 ATS vs. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers over the past three seasons, going 2-0 SU and ATS last year.

The Bucs are banged up right now, with Chris Godwin and Jalen McMillan both out and some other notable players carrying questionable tags as of Wednesday morning (Tristan Wirfs, Cade Otton, Rachaad White).

The Falcons spent most of their draft capital bolstering the defence because Michael Penix already has the tools he needs to shine.

-Horrobin

ATS picks

Bengals -5.5 (-110): The big question mark around the Bengals is their defence but I have no problem fading the Cleveland Browns in Week 1.

Joe Flacco makes his return to Cleveland after a season in Indianapolis, where he went 2-4 with 12 TDs and seven INTs.

The Browns had a -177 point differential last season, and the roster isn’t improved enough to make me think they have a chance against Joe Burrow and the Bengals.

-Closs

49ers -2.5 (-112): I’m all in on the 49ers this season and expect them to put the league on notice with a beatdown of a far inferior Seahawks squad on Sunday.

Christian McCaffrey is back and reportedly in top shape, and the defence will undoubtedly look better with returning defensive coordinator Robert Saleh at the helm.

Sam Darnold, who now quarterbacks the Seahawks, no longer has offensive guru Kevin O’Connell to hold his hand in tough moments.

The former first-round pick was shell-shocked down the stretch against legitimate defences last year, and Saleh’s unit should give him plenty of problems.

The Niners are 4-1 against the Seahawks when CMC plays, with a +56 point differential.

-Perri

Best moneyline bet

Dolphins ML (-105): Since Tua Tagovailoa was drafted, Miami has a 40-24 record when the quarterback is healthy.

Staying healthy has been a problem, but that shouldn’t be a concern in Week 1. In fact, the Dolphins are 4-0 in Week 1 games with Tagovailoa as the starter.

He should give Miami a distinct QB advantage as the Indianapolis Colts are rolling out Daniel Jones in Week 1. That’s enough for me to side with the Phins at a pick’em price.

NFL Week 1 best bets: Player props

Chuba Hubbard over 10.5 receiving yards (-117): Hubbard was the centre piece of Carolina’s offence last year, logging 293 touches and 1,366 all-purpose yards in 15 games.

The running back caught 43 of 54 targets for 171 yards. And while 4.0 yards/catch isn’t eye-popping, the volume is encouraging.

Hubbard caught four passes in the final three games of the season, clearing this line each time.

Now, he gets to go up against a Jacksonville Jaguars team which allowed the fourth-most receptions and second-most receiving yards per game to opposing RBs last season.

Hubbard should blow by this mark.

-Perri

Christian McCaffrey to score (-143): This is a lot of juice, but I doubt you’ll see McCaffrey with a line like this for the rest of the season.

Not long ago, CMC scored in an NFL-record-tying 17 consecutive games. After his streak was snapped, he found the end zone in eight of his next 10 games, culminating with a TD in Super Bowl LVIII.

We can throw McCaffrey’s 2024 season in the trash. San Francisco will need him at his best to rebound, and I can’t imagine Kyle Shanahan giving Week 1 red-zone touches to Brian Robinson Jr.

-Perri
