Best NHL anytime goal picks Oct. 23: Back Pastrnak and Caufield on Thursday

NHL anytime goal picks

David Pastrnak headlines Thursday’s NHL goal picks.

The pregame narrative: The Boston Bruins have lost five straight games, but Pastrnak has been an offensive force during that stretch. I like the former Rocket Richard winner to capitalize on a cushy matchup against the Anaheim Ducks.

Check out my NHL anytime goal picks for Oct. 23, featuring a pick on Cole Caufield.

NHL anytime goal picks

Best Bet: Pastrnak to score a goal (+100)

Pastrnak has been the model of consistency as far as NHL goalscorers go.

He’s netted at least 40 goals in each of the last five full seasons, winning the Rocket Richard Trophy in 2021-22 with 61 goals.

Today’s Bruins are much worse for wear than those Bruins, but Pastrnak has still found ways to produce.

  • Pastrnak has four goals and 10 points through eight games.
  • He’s leading the Bruins in shot attempts (72), shots (31), scoring chances (23) and xG (3.34), according to Natural Stat Trick.

-> Bet on David Pastrnak to score tonight!

Boston should get back in the win column tonight at home against Anaheim.

The Ducks are starting backup netminder Petr Mrazek, who gave up six goals on 23 shots to the San Jose Sharks in his lone start this year.

Last season, Mrazek ranked 52nd in GAA (3.35) and 44th in SV% (.891) among qualified goaltenders.

Key stat: Anaheim is allowing the most high-danger chances per 60 (13.18) since the start of last season.

NHL predictions

Caufield to score a goal (+188): Caufield is off to a great start for the Atlantic Division-leading Montreal Canadiens, scoring five goals in eight games.

The American winger plays top-line minutes alongside Nick Suzuki and Juraj Slafkovsky, and he leads Montreal in shot attempts (39) and xG (3.29).

Edmonton is a strong defensive team, but it has a serious problem in goal that wasn’t addressed this offseason.

-> Back Cole Caufield against the Edmonton Oilers

Calvin Pickard is between the pipes tonight, and he has an .865 SV% through two games. You could say it’s only two games, but Pickard ranked 67th in goals saved above expected on a 60-minute basis last year, per MoneyPuck.

Caufield and the Canadiens should be licking their chops tonight.

Dodgers vs. Blue Jays Game 1 World Series odds: Toronto is home underdog at Rogers Centre on Friday

Dodgers vs. Blue Jays odds

The Toronto Blue Jays are back in the World Series after 32 long years. Their opponent? The reigning champion Los Angeles Dodgers.

The latest: George Springer sent the Seattle Mariners packing with a come-from-behind blast in Game 7 of the ALCS, setting up this epic matchup, which will begin in Toronto on Friday. The Dodgers went 2-1 against the Blue Jays this year and are favoured to win Game 1.

Dodgers vs. Blue Jays odds

No one expected the Blue Jays, a team with a sub-80 win total projection, to be here.

But Toronto has exceeded all expectations to deliver the franchise’s first World Series apperance in more than three decades.

The Jays had to climb out of a 0-2 hole against the Mariners in the ALCS. It was gritty, but starting slow against the Dodgers — who just swept the NLCS against the top-seeded Milwaukee Brewers — would likely be a death sentence.

Winning Game 1 is imperative, and Trey Yesavage will get the ball for Toronto in the series opener after Kevin Gausman was used in relief on Monday.

-> Bet on the Blue Jays to win the World Series!

The rookie has a pair of stellar postseason starts under his belt:

  • ALDS Game 2: 5.1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 11 K
  • ALCS Game 6: 5.2 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 7 K

Los Angeles has a quartet of Cy Young-calibre arms at its disposal, and the first to take the mound will be Blake Snell.

The veteran left-hander has been borderline unhittable this postseason, sporting a 0.86 ERA across three starts. In those 21 innings, he has 28 Ks while allowing just six hits.

Each team is loaded with offensive talent. Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts and George Springer will take centre stage — and it’s looking like Bo Bichette will join them.

Best NBA prop bets Oct. 23: Back Nembhard and Jokic on Thursday night

NBA prop bets

Thursday’s NBA slate features just two games, including an NBA Finals rematch between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers.

The latest: Indiana is a hefty home underdog with Tyrese Haliburton, who tore his Achillies in Game 7 of the finals, sidelined. I expect Andrew Nembhard to step up in his absence, with Cason Wallace doing damage for the visitors.

Check out the best NBA prop bets for Oct. 23, featuring a pick on three-time MVP Nikola Jokic when the Golden State Warriors host the Denver Nuggets.

NBA prop bets

Best bet: Nembhard over 20.5 points and assists (-118)

Oklahoma City is the league’s best defensive team, so this isn’t exactly a good matchup for Nembhard.

But I’m keen to back the Canadian in this spot. Nembhard has improved his game year-over-year and has an opportunity to take a huge leap with Haliburton out.

Nembhard averaged career highs in points (10.0) and assists (5.0) last season. Thats well under this number, but his numbers without Haliburton are much better (43 games played):

  • 13.0 PPG
  • 6.8 APG
  • 12.1 FGA/game

-> Bet on Andrew Nembhard against the defending champs

Nembhard only shot 42.7% from the field in those non-Haliburton contests, so there’s certainly room to grow from an offensive standpoint.

As a passer, I’m hoping he can supplant some of Haliburton’s 9.2 assists per game, which ranked third in the NBA.

Key stat: Nembhard cleared this line in consecutive games to close out the finals against OKC.

Embed: #119997

Best NBA picks

Wallace over 1.5 threes (+130): This seems like solid value for Wallace, a member of OKC’s bench mob who should get staters’ minutes on Thursday.

  • Isiah Joe and Jalen Williams are out. They ranked first and fourth, respectively, in 3-point attempts per game for OKC last season.
  • Lu Dort, who ranked second in 3s attempted per game, is listed as questionable with an ankle sprain.

Wallace is a career 38.9% three-point shooter. He went 3-for-8 from deep on opening night while playing a career-high 42 minutes.

That game did go into double overtime, but he was one of the players Mark Daigneault leaned on down the stretch.

Jokic over 10.5 rebounds (-138): The only question with Jokic at this point is how long he will want to play in the NBA. Because if he’s on the court, good luck stopping him.

-> Bet on Nikola Jokic at NorthStar Bets

Jokic has averaged north of 11.5 rebounds in four straight seasons and ranked third in rebounds per game (12.7) last year.

He’s going to play huge minutes on a nightly basis and has a great matchup against the Warriors.

The tallest player in Golden State’s starting lineup is 6-foot-7 power forward Jonathan Kuminga.

Jokic only played this iteration of the Warriors once — that’s to say, with Jimmy Butler — and cleared this line.

Warriors vs. Lakers NBA opening night SGP predictions: Back Doncic and Curry in +330 ticket

Warriors vs. Lakers predictions

The NBA’s opening night concludes with a marquee West Coast matchup between the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors.

The pregame narrative: Los Angeles is a 3.5-point home underdog, with LeBron James (sciatica) sidelined untill mid-November. There’s still plenty of star power in this matchup, though, with Steph Curry and Luka Doncic favoured to lead their respective teams in scoring.

Check out my Warriors vs. Lakers same-game parlay predictions for the NBA’s season opener, featuring both star point guards.

Warriors vs. Lakers SGP predictions

SGP: Under 237.5 points | Doncic 3+ threes | Curry 6+ assists (+330)

Under 237.5 points (-305): I want to stay away from picking a side in this matchup. Instead, let’s take the under on this heavily teased total, which provides solid negative correlation with the following two prop bets.

Last season, three of the four matchups between these teams went well under this total. The lone over landed on 239 points.

LeBron played in each of those games, and the ageless superstar averaged 32.3 PPG.

The King didn’t bring much to the table defensively in his age-40 season, so his absence should make it tougher for both teams to score.

Golden State ranked seventh in defensive rating last season, and both teams sat outside of the top half of the league in pace (possessions per 48 minutes).

Expect a slog on night one.

Embed: #119964

-> Don’t miss out — Bet on the opening night of the NBA!

NBA opening night SGP picks

Doncic 3+ threes (-275): Doncic is one of the NBA’s elite deep threats, ranking top-five in 3s attempted and made per game in each of the past two seasons.

  • 2023-24: 4.1 threes on 10.6 attempts (38.2%)
  • 2024-25: 3.5 threes on 9.6 attempts (36.8%)

That type of volume puts this milestone in play on a nightly basis.

The Warriors are far from a plus matchup, allowing the second-fewest 3s per game to opposing point guards last season, per Fantasy Pros.

But Doncic is going to get his shots up against any team, especially with LeBron (who averaged 5.7 three-point attempts per game) sidelined.

-> Bet on Doncic and more Warriors vs. Lakers prop markets

Curry 6+ assists (+105): Curry is a bucket-getter first and foremost, and that makes his remarkably consistent passing somewhat underrated.

  • The future Hall of Famer has averaged 6+ assists in three of his last four seasons and 10 of his last 13.
  • Last year, Curry averaged 6.0 assists and went 42-28 against this line.
  • That includes three of the four games he played agianst the Lakers.

Los Angeles gave up the fourth-most assists per game to point guards last year (9.46). Expect Curry to be active as a passer again.

Best NHL anytime goal picks Oct. 21: Back Mikko Rantanen and Anders Lee on Tuesday

NHL anytime goal picks

Mikko Rantanen headlines Tuesday’s NHL anytime goalscorer picks.

The pregame narrative: Rantanen has started hot in his first full season with the Dallas Stars, and he has a favourable matchup against the Columbus Blue Jackets tonight. Elsewhere, I’m backing New York Islanders forward Anders Lee to produce.

NHL anytime goal picks

Best Bet: Rantanen anytime goalscorer (+125)

Rantanen flexed his clutch gene in the playoffs last year, scoring nine goals and 22 points in 18 games with the Stars.

But the question remains: Can he do it on a random night in October?

The answer is obviously yes. Rantanen scored 42 and 55 goals in his last two full regular seasons with the Colorado Avalanche and has netted three through five entering play on Tuesday.

-> Bet on the Mikko Rantanen to score tonight!

The Finnish forward ranks third on Dallas in scoring chances (18) and xG (1.94), per Natural Stat Trick.

Columbus is starting netminder Elvis Merzlikins, who has been consistently below average since his rookie season.

The goaltender has posted a sub-.900 save percentage in three straight seasons, and his 3.54 GAA currently ranks 46th in the league.

Key stat: Rantanen has scored five goals in his last five games against Columbus.

NHL predictions

Lee to score a goal (+220): Lee has continued to produce for the Islanders in his later years, netting 28-plus goals in three of his last four seasons.

He’s already scored two goals in five games so far and has a fantastic matchup tonight against the San Jose Sharks.

-> Don’t miss out — Bet on tonight’s NHL markets

Yaroslav Askarov is in goal for San Jose and he’s gotten shelled through two starts:

  • Oct 10 vs. ANA: .841 SV%, 7 GA
  • Oct. 17 vs. UTA: .824 SV%, 6 GA

The Russian posted a 3.10 and .896 SV% in 13 appearances last year, so I don’t trust his abilities to rebound behind an awful defence.

San Jose is allowing the most shots against per game (35.8).

Devils vs. Maple Leafs prop picks Oct. 21: Back Matthews and fade Meier on Tuesday

Maple Leafs picks

The Toronto Maple Leafs are back in action following a turbulent weekend, hosting the New Jersey Devils at Scotiabank Arena on Tuesday.

The pregame narrative: Toronto lost in overtime to the Seattle Kraken on Saturday, leading to some pointed remarks from netminder Anthony Stolarz. He’s tasked with stopping a Devils team averaging the fourth-most goals per game (3.80). Will the Maple Leafs, who are slightly favoured, answer the bell?

Check out my Maple Leafs prop picks for Oct. 21, featuring predictions on Auston Matthews and Timo Meier

Maple Leafs picks vs. Devils

Best bet: Matthews to score (+117)

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. made a fashion statement yesterday, walking into Game 7 of the Toronto Blue Jays’ ALCS matchup wearing this:

The Jays won, and I’m hoping Matthews can keep the good vibes rolling with a goal tonight.

-> Bet on Auston Matthews to score tonight!

Of course, that’s not my only rationale for this pick. Toronto’s captain is one of, if not the very best, goalscorers in the NHL.

  • Matthews is two seasons removed from scoring a franchise-record 69 goals, and he’s on pace for 54 through six games.
  • He has four goals so far and leads the entire NHL in xG (4.63), according to Natural Stat Trick.
  • Matthews also leads Toronto in shot attempts (47), scoring chances (31) and high-danger chances (11).

New Jersey is 4-1-0 but has played in several barn-burners. The Devils are giving up 3.0 goals per game and the ninth-most chances against per 60 (62.6).

Key stat: Matthews has scored in six of his last seven games against New Jersey (eight total goals).

Embed: #119953

Best NHL prop predictions

Meier to not record a point (-106): Stolarz put his teammates in the spotlight after Saturday’s loss, calling out Toronto’s grit, work ethic, and willingness to defend the crease.

Maybe he should have kept those remarks behind closed doors, but I trust Toronto to respond.

Stolarz has had a shaky start, but he’s fresh off a career season in which he posted a 2.14 GAA and led the NHL in save percentage (.926).

-> Don’t miss out — Bet on Devils vs. Maple Leafs prop markets

The Leafs’ defence was elite at clogging high-danger areas last season and should be fighting tooth and nail for that space after what happened on the weekend.

Meier is skating on New Jersey’s second line, alongside Nico Hischier and Dawson Mercer. He’s been productive so far but is still only 3-2 against this line.

Meier has never logged more than 53 points in a full season with New Jersey.
